Great variation of birds at Ottenby in the last few days.
Strong winds from the east blowen any chances for good numbers of birds, the western migratory species were pushed away and the numbers immediatly dropped. But, don't worry, eastern species compensated for the low numbers.
Every day we caught between 25 to 110 birds; with Red-breasted Flycatchers every day (1-2). As always, best species came after all the more common eastern migrants.. the rest is detailed in the coming report:
מגוון רחב של מינים נצפו וטובעו באוטנבי בימים האחרונים.
רוחות מזרחיות עזות וממושכות מהרגיל לעונה הביאו איתן כמויות יפות מאוד של מינים מזרחיים בשעה שהכמות הכוללת ירדה מאוד. הטיבוע ברוחות עזות הוא חלש למדי אך המינים השונים פיצו על כך. מידי יום נלכדו 25 עד 110 ציפורים כשבכל יום חטפית גמדית או שתיים. כמובן שרק לאחר עלייה במינים המזרחיים היותר נפוצים הגיעו המינים המגניבים באמת (כלומר, אל תתעצלו, הסוף הכי שווה!):
After few days with Few Common Redstarts Phoenicurus phoenicurus the migartion pick of this species was more sighnificant also in our nets with 6 of them caught and ringed . Just a remainder- it's very windy! many more were seen all around the station and in the forest. In addition, we had some Chaffinches Fringilla coelebs and two females (adult and 2nd year) were nicly compared. More information at the end of this post (don't want to bore you before the cool birds).
אחרי כמה ימים בהם נצפות הרבה חכליליות עצים בשטח ב-17.5 טובעו 6 פרטים המהווים את שיא הלכידה של מין זה ליום. שוב, מזכירה לכם כי הרוחות העזות פוגות אנושות בלכידה. הרבה חכליליות נוספות נצפו בשטח התחנה וביער הסמוך. בנוסף, עלייה משמעותית במספר הפרושים המצויים התבטאה אף היא בטיבוע וסיפקה לנו הזדמנות נחמדה להשוות בין גילאים שונים. פירוט בסוף הפוסט (וזאת על מנת שלא תתעייפו בטרם יגיעו המינים המגניבים באמת! אני כל כך מתחשבת היום!)

On the 18th we had a tinny pick of another species- the Common Rosefinch Carpodacus erythrinus. Every day in last period we had 1-2 per day and on the 18th we caught 3 new ones and saw few more flying around with no rings. In Israel I never saw a clourful male so I expected to get to see some over here (Isn't it Europe?!) but unfortunetaly also here we had only females and immature males (pink comes only on third year).
ב-18 לחודש היה גל פצפון של לכידת מין שנלכד בקביעות בימים האחרונים- ורדית אירופית. מידי יום נלכדות אחת או שתיים והיום נלכדו לא פחות מ-3! כמו כן נראו מספר פרטים נוספים ללא טבעות. בישראל, עד כה, יצא לי לראות אך ורק נקבות או זכרים צעירים (הוון הורוד מופיע רק לקראת השנה השלישית) וציפיתי שבאירופה כן יראו זכרים ורודים. אז זהו, שזה לא עובד! גם באוטנבי הרוב המוחלט של התצפיות הן של פרטים ללא שמץ של ורוד. בזיון.

On the 15th we had new migration wave- 13 Spotted flycatchers Muscicapa striata were caught and 11 Black&white Flycatchers were ringed, mainly Pied hypoleuca but also 2 Collared albicollis out of daily total of 110 birds. We mostly caught second-year Flycatchers.
ב-15 במאי הגיע גל נדידה חדש- של חטפיות. נלכדו 13 חטפיות אפורות ו-11 חטפיות שחורות לבנות בהן 2 לבנות עורף ותשע שחורות עורף, רובן בשנתן השנייה. כל זאת מתוך 110 ציפורים שטובעו בבוקר זה בסך הכל.

Every few days we catch a Grasshopper warbler Locustella naevia and we hear one singing male in the garden in most of the mornings, just as dawn breaks over the horizon (however, I wonder if it is possible to call ths nois singing? I'm not so sure but it is a very cool call in my opinion).
This Garsshopper Warbler was caught on the 19th and I immediatly noticed its weird bill colour. This bird has a very dark bill when compared with other birds we ringed this spring. I think it might be a possible indicate for males if concidering the bill colour changes occurs also in Prinia warblers, House Sparrowes and few more species. In mentioned species the male's bills get darker during breeding period due to hormonalic changes. Does any of the readers know this phenomena in Grasshopper Warblers? I'd love to hear any comments! I couldn't find anything in Svensson's book or in Birds of Western Palearctic or any furthur knowledge among ringers at Ottenby (ecxapt for Aron Edman noteing that he have seen few birds with dark bills in spring time and some singing males show dark bills supporting my gut feeling). Surpriseing to have no furthur description of this phenomenon when considering the fact that it is a widespread species in Europe.
מידי כמה ימים ממשיכים להילכד חרגולנים מנומרים ואחד מהם אף פוצח בזמזום-שירה מידי בוקר, עם הופעת הפסים המוארים הראשונים באופק. עוד בטרם ניתן להגדיר זאת כאור ראשון הוא כבר שר במלוא הכוח, אם אפשר להגדיר זמזום מוזר זה כשירה (לאלו מביניכם שלא מכירים את שירתו החרגולית מומלץ לפתוח Xeno-canto לחפש 'חרגולן מנומר' באנגלית ולבדוק את העניין)
ב-19 במאי נלכד פרט שמיידית אפשר היה להבחין שמשהו מוזר במראהו- יש לו מקור כהה לגמרי. בהשוואה לפרטים קודמים שנלכדו פה באביב האחרון זה חריג למדי. התופעה התקשרה בראשי לתופעה דומה המוכרת היטב בארצנו, השתנות צבע המקור של פשושים באביב מאפור ורוד לשחור לגמרי (דבר דומה קיים גם אצל הדרורים).
בדיקה ספרותית קצרה העלתה שסוונסון לא ציין דבר בנוגע לגוון המקור כמו גם ב-BWP. בקרב המטבעים בתחנה לא נמצא מי שמכיר את התופעה אך ארון אדמון (התנדב ב-2009 בפארק צפרות אילת, מטבע וצפר מוכשר לכל הדעות) מספר כי מידי שנה באביב הוא מבחין בכמה כאלו, פעם בכמה שנים נלכד פרט כזה ויצא לו לראות תמונות זכרים בשירה עם מקור שחור. מפתיע שהדבר לא נבדק יותר לעומק בהתחשב בהיותו מין נפוץ כל כך באירופה.

When Petter checked the duck trap he came with a bird we couldn't exect: a Common Sandpiper Actitis hypoleucos. A nice upgrade to our ringing day...
כשפטר שב מהבדיקה היומית של מלכודת הברווזים הופתענו כולנו למראה הציפור שלכד- ביצנית לבנת בטן! ציפור מגניבה לקינוח יום טיבוע חביב ביותר.

On the 20th we caught the best bird so far (at least in my opinion.. I was eagerly waiting to have one of those in hand for many years, preferably at Eilat but also at Ottenby it's acceptable..)
It was waiting in the net when Christopher made a round without me (I had to work at the ringing lab) and when he took it out of the bird-bag, when at the lab again, my eyes grew as wide as possible or even a little more.. What an eyebrow! What a short rounded wing!
After some measurmants the conclution was clear- not Blyt's but a Paddyfield Warbler Acrocephalus agricola!!! Defently not a common bird, one out of 20~ observations in Sweden.
Many birders came to see it in hand and few hundreds were lucky to see it hopping in front of Ottenby's veranda all along the next day (on the closed for public area which became open due to the special circumstanses). It was peeking every 7-9 minutes in mid-day and a litltle less frequently on the afternoon (about every 20 min). On the next morning it disaapeard, leaving some frustrated late coming birders.
So nice!
On same day we also sat the wader-traps again and had 4 new Dunlins Calidris alpina alpina and a Ringed Plover Charidris hiaticula. After posting a not fully summer plumaged Dunlin I now add pics of an adult bird in full summer plumage. Later in the evening we had to remove the traps since coming rain affected the water level very fastly and the traps were flooded and about to drift into sea (Thanks to Micha all were safly located on higer pards of shore).
For about two weeks I nag the whole stuff here about my top wishlist by now- The Greenish Warbler philloscopus trochiloides.
I was told by Christopher and Magnus that they'll come on the 20th and I was waiting, and waiting.. On the 16th (or so) Puntus heard one in the forest. On the 18-19th one was heard 3 km to the north but we weren't lucky enough to relocate it and in the 20th I told almost every person I met (including some bored doods on the birding spots around that on the next day I'll get my badly awaited specis!
Amazingly, that what happenned! Before I finished to brush my teeth Jon came into the white house to call me (5:25~) and told me there is a singing Greenish warbler infront of the house!! I ran out, half asleep, heared and saw it perfectly. After getting basic satisfaction I got back in, to wash my face and so on. 20 more minutes of watch provided one more bird and when eating fast breakfast at around 6:00 one was caught!
I had the perfect combination of field observation and ringing afterwards... Since then we hear one every morning or two. Splendid!
On the 22nt annother eastern pretty boring species in my prospective and a cool bird in Swedish prospective- River Warbler Locustella fluviatilis.
Many people came to see this nice olive-brown warbler. Only few are seenqheard at Ottenby every year.
For about four days we have a lovly male Black-headed Yellow Wagtail Motacilla flava feldegg wandering around the eastern pond (same location as the Paddyfield). This is another eastern (sub)species which is seldomly seen in Sweden and was brought over by the strong winds.
After some special effort we caught it on the afternoon of the 22nd. After a pretty long disscution it was determind as an adult male.
Alula pattern- Adult has darker black colour with neat fringe.
Same with Primary coverts.
The Lesser Coverts of the adult females are many times much grayer than Brown as seen in the next pic.
If two ages of Greater coverts are available it's very helpful (2nd year then). doesn't always occur.
In addition, the Primaries and Tert. of adult birds are significatlly less worn in most cases.
Another slightly difficult diffrence is shown when checking the tail. the adult birds have wider and rounded tipped restricts.
Few tens of Four-spotted Chasers Libellula quadrimaculata were seen in our helgoland traps in the last few days. This is one of the commonest species in Europe but also many rare dragonflies were found here before. Hope to see something special in the next two weeks I have here.

ב-20 במאי, הגיעה מתנת יום הולדת באיחור רציני... הציפור הכי שווה העונה- קנית אורז? (לא, קניתי פסטה.. נסו להתלוצץ על זה עם שוודים בתרגום לאנגלית ותבינו כמה הסתבכתי) שנים שאני רוצה לראות אחת כזו וסוף כל סוף, נישאת על כנפי הרוחות המזרחיות היא הגיעה אליי אך למקום הלא נכון. בפעם הבאה, בבקשה, באילת.
בכל אופן, אני נותרתי במעבדת הטיבוע בשעה שכריסטופר יצא לסיבוב בלעדיי, בלי שהיה לי מושג מה חיכה לו ברשת. כשחזר, הוציא מהשקית איזו קנית בעודי מגיילת סבכי קוצים מסובך מהממוצע. ופתאום, בזווית העין, ראיתי אותה. העיניים נפתחו יותר מאי פעם, הידיים החלו לרעוד. איזו גבה! איזו כנף קצרה ומעוגלת! כמה מדידות והמסקנה הייתה מתבקשת- קנית אורז! אחת מתוך כ-20 שנצפו בשוודיה עד כה (רק כפול מבישראל).
אינספור צפרים הגיעו לראותה ביד ועוד מאות הגיעו ביום שלאחר מכן. הציפור החביבה קיפצה בעשבייה הסמוכה לבריכה ממזרח לתחנת הטיבוע ונראתה היטב מן המרפסת הפרטית שלנו. לרגל המאורע נפתח השטח הסגור לצוות בלבד ומאות ביקרו אותנו (תוך שהם משאירים תרומות נכבדות לתחנת הטיבוע ביוצאם, מנהג יפה). בבוקר ובצהרים הציצה בין העשבים מידי 7-9 דקות ובשעות אחר הצהרים רק פעם ב-20 דקות לערך. בבוקר הבא נעלמה כלא הייתה, מותירה כמה עשרות צפרים מאחרים וממורמרים.
איזה כיף!

עוד מאותו יום- הצבנו מחדש את מלכודות החופמאים. נלכדו 4 חופיות אלפיניות וחופמי צווארון. בהמשך עלו המים בגלל הגשם הקרב ונאלצנו להוציאן מכלל שימוש פעם נוספת (לא לפני שרבות כמעט נסחפו לים ורק הודות למבצע הצלה זריז נאספו ונערמו על חוף מבטחים). מאחר שבפוסט הקודם צירפתי תמונות של פרט בחילוף אני מצרפת הפעם פרט בוגר בלבוש קיץ מלא:

בשבועיים האחרונים אני מאמינה שהצלחתי לחרפן לגמרי את כל חברי הצוות בשאלות על עלווית בלטית- ראש רשימת המבוקשים שלי לעת עתה. כריסטופר ומגנוס הרגיעו אותי שהן תגענה עד ה-20 לחודש ואני ישבתי וחיכיתי בסלבנות, כמעט. ב-16 פונטוס שמע אחת בשירה ביער. ב-18-19 נשמע פרט נוסף במרחק 3 ק"מ מצפון לתחנת הטיבוע. כל חיפושינו עלו בתוהו. אבל ב-20 לחודש, כשהתחזית לבוקר המחרת הייתה בעיקר להמון גשם אני במין אופטימיוות לא הגיונית הודעתי לכולם שמחר היא תגיע! העלווית הבלטית שלי הוזמנה ותגיע כפי שאני החלטתי בבוקר ה-21. אני חוששת שאפילו עם חלק מהפנסיונרים ה'צפרים' הנפוצים פה כל כך חלקתי זאת.
במפתיע, כך היה! עוד בטרם הספקתי לצחצח שיניים נשמע קול מבעד לדלת השירותים. יון עמד מחוץ לדלת והכריז כי יש עלווית בלטית שרה בחצר, ממש מול לבית הלבן! רצתי החוצה, חצי עין פקוחה בלבד הספיקה כדי לשמוע אותה היטב ואף לצפות בה באמצעות הטלסקופ של אחד מחבריי השוודים החדשים (נציג ועדת הנדירים השוודית). חזרתי לצחצח שיניים והמשכתי לעוד כעשרים דקות של תצפית והאזנה לציפור חמודה זו (ועוד פרט שנשמע בזמן זה). מעט מאוחר יותר, בעודי אוכלת ארוחת בוקר חפוזה הגיעה הידיעה- היא נלכדה! ריצה, קפיצה וכמה דילוגים ריחופיים באוויר והייתי במעבדה. היה זה השילוב המושלם ביותר- קודם כל לשמוע פרט בשירה, לצפות בו היטב ואז גם לטבעו. מגניב!!!

בבוקר ה-22 במאי נלכדה עוד ציפור מעט נדושה במושגים שלי אך מעניינת וייחודית לטעמם של השוודים- חרגולן נחלים. אל תבינו לא נכון, אני חובבת מושבעת של ציפור זו, פשוט לא זו הסיבה בגללה הגעתי לשוודיה(=להתרגש מחרגולני נחלים).

במשך כארבעה ימים נצפה בקרבת התחנה (באותם עשבים בהם נראתה קנית האורז ואף במקביל אליה) נחליאלי צהוב מתת המין המזרח אירופאי - Feldegg. זהו עוד (תת)מין שהביאו עמן הרוחות המזרחיות. בעוד שבישראל מדובר בנודד נפוץ ביותר בשוודיה מדובר במין נדיר בהחלט.
לאחר שהושקע קצת מאמץ בעניין הוא נלכד ב-22 במאי בשעות אחר הצהריים. לאחר דיון ממושך של החבר'ה השוודים זוהה כזכר בוגר.

When compairing aduld and 2nd-year female Chaffinch Fringila coelebs few identification signes are relevant:Alula pattern- Adult has darker black colour with neat fringe.
Same with Primary coverts.

כאשר משווים בין פרושה בוגרת לפרט בשנה שנייה ישנם מספר סימנים רלוונטיים במיוחד:
דגם האלולה וסוככות היד- לבוגרת גוון שחור כהה במרכז הנוצה ואף תיחום בהיר יפה ו'נקי' בשוליים החיצוניים. זאת בניגוד לאלולה וסוככות יד חומות למדי של הצעירה.
דגם סוככות קטנות- פעמים רבות ניתן לראות כי לנקבה הבוגרת גוון אפור ניכר בסוככות הקטנות בשעה שלצעירה גוון חום.
שני גילאים בסוככות הגדולות- במקרים בהם שני גילאים (ישם מהקן וחדש מעט יותר מהקיץ) בסוככות אמה מדובר בוודאות בפרט צעיר. לא תמיד ישנו גבול חילוף.
בלייה- לפרטים בשנתם השנייה נטייה לבלייה רבה יותר באברות היד והשלישוניות.

כמה עשרות שפיריות ממין Four-spotted Chasers נראו במלכודותינו בימים האחרונים. מדובר באחד המינים הנפוצים ביותר באירופה אך בעבר נמצאו באוטנבי מינים נדירים של שפיריות וכמה מן המינים שנצפו אי פעם בשוודיה נצפו באוטנבי בלבד. מקווה למצוא משהו מיוחד יותר בשבועיים שנותרו..
