Duisburg, Germany, is the hometown of my father. Thirty years ago, no sane people could imagine that the name "Duisburg" will appear in a birding blog. The German city, located by the Rhein River, was a huge industrial area. It was mostly famous for the heavy industry such as steel factories. The skies were gray all year round thanks to thick layer of polluted air, streets were full of black dust and trees couldn't survive easily. Mainly Rats and Carrion Crows Corvus corone could manage in the dirty city. Occasionally Gulls were flying along the Rhein, but not more than that. 

דיסבורג שבגרמניה היא עיר הולדתו של אבי. לפני שלושים שנה ויותר, איש לא היה מדמיין ששמה של העיר יופיע בבלוג העוסק בצפרות או טבע... העיר שוכנת לאורך קטע רב פלגים של נהר הריין מה שהפך אותה למרכז תעשייה אידאלי עם אפשרות נוחה להעברת תוצרים כבדים במיוחד- תעשיית הפלדה הכבדה הפכה לעיקר סביבו התבססה עיר מפוחמת, עטוית שכבה כבדה של אוויר מזוהם. החיות בעיר היו בעיקר החולדות והעורבים האירופאים; ששגשגו על אף הלכלוך בעיר. לאורך הנהר עופפו שחפים אך לא הרבה מעבר לכך.

As a child (10-15 years ago, plus minus) I remember it as a pretty gray city with a nice garden next to my grandfather's house. The grass was green and soft also in August, the Robins Erithacus rubecula and Wrens Troglodytes troglodytes were hopping in the bushes and on the grass a hare was seen every now and then. Apparently, these were the first years with hares around Duisburg. Back then, most of the industry was moved to cheaper areas of the world and the nature started to rehabilitate. First the plants, next some stronger species of animals as hares and next followed others.

כילדה, לפני מעט יותר מעשור, זכורה לי העיר כאפורה אך עם גינה נאה בחצר הבית של סבי. הדשא היה ירוק ורך, אפילו באוגוסט! אדומי חזה וגדרונים קיפצו בגדר החיה ולעיתים ארנבת הייתה מגיעה לביקור חטוף ונשנוש עשב עסיסי. מסתבר כי היו אלו מהארנבות הראשונות של העיר, באותה עת הועברה מרבית התעשייה שעוד נותרה בעיר לאזורים זולים יותר בעולם והטבע החל בתהליך איטי של שיקום והתפתחות מתוך הזוהמה. ראשית החלו הצמחים ללבלב, אחריהם הגיעו הארנבות ואף בעלי חיים נוספים.

Now, when I came again to visit my family it was hard to recognize the garden. It was full of birds! And Hares were seen on every piece of grass, fighting with the Blackbirds over the few hides in the bushes. Lots of old un-maintained houses and gardens are attractive for plants, insects and larger animals. The air is still polluted and causing lots of health problems to the citizens that remained here, but already clean enough to allow some wildlife.

כעת, כששבתי לבקר בבית סבי קשה היה לזהות את הגינה- היא הייתה מלאה ציפורים! והארנבות? הן נראו בכל רגע של שקט, קיפצו מכל שיח, נלחמו עם השחרורים על מקומות המסתור המוצלים. העיר נחלשת למדי עם היעלמות התעשייה סביבה הוקמה והבתים הריקים, המתפוררים, בקצוות העיר מהווים בסיס טוב לצמחים, חרקים ואף בעלי חיים גדולים יותר. האוויר עדיין מזוהם אך מאפשר קצת יותר איכות חיים הן לתושבים והן לצמחים ובעלי חיים אחרים.

In one of the mornings I was woken up by my mom who "saw a huge bird eating in the garden". I sprang out of bet, ran down and there it was- a juvenile Gray Heron Ardea cinerea was eating a large frog in the center of the tinny garden. It was so concentrated with its feast it didn't notice me or the camera. Apparently, not only that there are Gray Herons in Duisburg but nowadays they even have a problem in the city since there are too many Gray Herons and they are eating the fish in the ornamental ponds.

באחד הבקרים, אמא העירה אותי לאחר שראתה "ציפור גדולה (בערך ככה) אוכלת משהו בחצר!". קיפצתי במהירות מהמיטה, רצתי למטה ושם עמדה במלוא תפארתה- אנפה אפורה צעירה שהייתה מרוכזת מידי באכילת צפרדע מגודלת מכדי להבחין בנוכחותנו. בהמשך, התברר שלא רק שישנן אנפות אפורות בלב העיר דיסבורג אלא שהם אף סובלים מריבוי אנפות אשר זוללות את הצפרדעים והדגים בבריכות הנוי של התושבים!

I could see many other birds around, in addition to the ones mentioned before- Wood Pigeons Columba palumbus, Dunnocks Perunella modularis, a family of Great Tit Parus major, Green Finches Carduelis/Chloris chloris and few more.    

ראיתי לא מעט ציפורים, נוספות על אלו שצויינו קודם לכן- יוני ענק, סתרים מצויים, ירגזים מצויים, ירקונים ועוד.

This post is based on my dads memories combined with accurate information from the newspapers and some citizens of Duisburg; Adding of my own observations, of course.

Tomord ringing station was my last station in this visit in Hungary. The camp, placed in the northern-western part on the country is very different than all the others I've visited. It's placed just by the mountains of Austria, in a beautiful forest with two little lakes. The combination of the forest species with the reedbed and fields species was pascinating, Also the fact that in this camp there are no internet (mantioned only to explain the trible delay in updating), no electricity, no runing water, not even a pub in the village (the rarest thing if you ask me).. 

The ringing had started there few decades ago and is continously done by volunteers. Not many birds are ringed (about 50 per day, morning and evening) but the variation is over all. In the hot period of the day we wend swimming in the smaller lake (where no ringing is conducted) or took a walk in the forest. It was most likely the best way to finish these 6 weeks in Hungary!

One of the commonest birds was the Robin Erithacus rubecula. The juveniles are just starting to moult into mre colourful plumage, amazing difference. Also looking better, it's matching their bills!

אחת הציפורים הנפוצות ביותר היא אדום החזה. הצעירים מתחילים זה עתה החליף לנוצות הצבעוניות של הבוגרים(מוותרים על הסוואה נפלאה לטובת יתרונות הצבע) והדבר הולם ביותר את בסיס המקור הכתמתם (כי לאלו מכם שלא ידעו- לאדום החזה אין 
חזה אדום).

In my opinion, the best bird I saw in this camp was undoubtly this amazing juvenile Mistle Thrush Turdus viscivorus. It was caught in the first round of the morning (sorry for the lack of light.. I would be happy to ring amazing birds in mid-day but no, all the best birds always teach us a lesson and the bottom line of it is that we must wake up as early as possible and than even claim we enjoy it!)

לטעמי הציפור המלהיבה ביותר שיצא לי לראות במשך כל שהייתי בטומורד היא ללא ספק הקיכלי הגדול הצעיר הזה. כמובן, הוא נלכד בסיבוב ראשון מה שמביא אותי להתנצלות כנה על החוסר באור, תאמינו לי שהוא כזה אפור לבן גם במציאות בבקשה |(ואין מה לעשות כמיטב הציפורים השוות, הוא חיזק ולימד שחייבים לקום מוקדם אם רוצים את ההפתעות המעניינות, ככה זה. רצוי גם לטעון שאוהבים את זה לטובת הביטחון העצמי וחיזוק הדימוי הצפרי).

Many Sylvia Warblers are ringed daily, most of them already in the beggining of their migration south. Mostly after partial feather moult. But some were very juvenile and clearly fledged in the last few days. It was nice to compair.

 המוני סבכים נלכדים מידי יום בתחנת הטיבוע טומורד. רובם כבר במסע הנדידה דרומה, לאחר שהשלימו חילוף נוצות חלקי. לעומתם, היה ניתן לראות גם פרטים צעירים ביותר שבבירור פרחו מן הקן רק בימים האחרונים. היה מעניין להשוות ביניהם.

 One of my favourites was this male Nuthatch Sitta europaea. Incredibly beautiful but also very skillful in both walking and climbing the tree as if if is not affected by gravity and in calling/singing with huge diversity. Multi talent indeed!

אחד המינים היותר מרשימים בהם נתקלתי באירופה הוא הסיטה האירופית. זאת לא רק הודות להיותן יפיות אלא גם בזכות כשרונותיהן הבולטים: לטפס ולקפץ על גזעי העצים כאילו אינן מושפעות מכוח הכבידה כלל וממגוון הקולות והשירה הרחב שלהן. בתמונות זכר שנלכד וטובע בטומורד והותיר בי רושם עצום.

Most of the time it seemd that the ground of the forest is moving, a closer check prooved it's adctually incredible amount of tinny juvenile frogs and toads.

רוב הזמן נדמה היה כי רצפת היער נעה ללא הרף. למעשה, היו אלו אינספור צפרדעים וקרפדות קטנטנות וצעירות שקיפצו על קרקע היער בחיפוש אחר מקורות מים חדשים ושונים מהאגם הקטן בו בקעו. 

At the end even I didn;t know in which habitat am I ringing... We caught a beautiful juvenile Eurasian Skylark Alauda arvensis, who came from a nearby field to visit the nets on the edge of the foret.

בסופו של דבר, גם אני לא הצלחתי לעקוב אחר בית הגידול בו אנו מטבעים כאשר נלכדה זרעית (השדה) ברשתות הסמוכות לשדה הגובל ביער.

On the way to the airport I had a ride with one of the volunteers of the camp. We stopped for coffee in a local piece of culture (after a week in a camp with no "real" shower, I remind you). The Hungarians are knowen for their special porcelain hand made art and in this fancy coffee house I was reveald to their lovely sense of humur, once again, when after the first sip of coffee an insect was exposed in the cup! Also the birds made me feel it the right place for me (the faces of the well dressed people having their breakfast broght me back to reality)

בדרך לשדה התעופה זכיתי לקיצור דרך משמעותי כשאחד מצוות המתנדבים היה צריך לנסוע לכיוון בודפשט צרכי עבודה. בדרך, כמו שצריך בהחלט אחרי בוקר טיבוע, עצרנו לקפה. היה זה בנקודה תרבותית במיוחד בה נחשפתי לפיסת אומנות מקומית- עבודת פורצלן (וזאת לאחר שבוע במקום בו אין מים זורמים ומקלחת מעבר לטבילה באגם פצפון המזכיר את המעיינות בהרי יהודה, למעשה). בבית הקפה המהודר הוגשה לנו כוס קפה מעולה (ובמחיר שלא הייתם מוצאים בארץ, לא בבית קפה כזה ולא בדומה, שישה ש"ח לערך) בכוס מרובת ציפורים. חוש ההומור ההונגרי נחשף לאחר הלגימה הראשונה- חרק בצבץ על שפת הכוס הפנימית! מגניב. עכשיו נשאר רק לייצר כאלו בארץ. 

In conclution...                                                            ולסיום בנימה פרידתית סיכומית

I had 6 incredibly good weeks in Hungary! Every week with a different welcoming team, most of the weeks in different stations, I've ringed thousands of birds from many different fascinating species, I had many nice opportunities to see and learn about nature conservation in many important projects and of course- add two "needed" lifers: Great Bustard Otis tarda and Bearded Tit Panurus biarmicus.

Once again I would like to thank a lot to all the wonderful people I've met along my too short visit in Hungary and over all to the almighty Béla Tokody for arranging this trip for me. It could never be so enriching and fun without your endless altruistic help! 

עברו עלי שישה שבועות מדהימים וחווייתיים בהונגריה. בכל שבוע פגשתי צוות שונה, עשרות מיני ציפורים, טיבעתי אלפים והועשרתי ברמות שקשה לתאר. אם כל האנשים בעולם רק היו יכולים לדעת כמה ייחודיות ומהנות הן החוויות הללו, כבר מזמן היו הופכים למטבעים וצפרים. נחשפתי לכמויות עצומות של ידע ולמגוון פרוייקטים חשובים העוסקים בשמירת טבע ברבדים שונים. כל הדברים הללו לא היו מתאפשרים אלמלא להכנסת האורחים החמה והמפנקת של ההונגרים ומעל לכל, לעזרתו של מטבע אחד שבזמנו הפנוי הלא קיים תיאם עבורי את כל שלבי הטיול. אנשים טובים עם נטייה כבדה לאלטרואיזם הם תמיד מתנה.
