זהירות- זה ממכר! Beaware of possible new addiction

אין דבר יותר נורא מתצפית ים.

את קמה בבוקר, רוח. מלא רוח. 15 מטרים לשנייה. לכל הפחות. וטיבוע? נו באמת. אולי 10 אדומי חזה ממורמרים ומפונפנים (יעני, נראים כמו פונפונים) נלכדים. רובם מאתמול.

ואין ברירה אלא לגשת שוב לתצפית הדרומית ולכוון טלסקופ לים. 

באמת שאין.

ומה רואים? משהו מעורפל כמו פנים של טייס ממרחק 500 מטרים ויותר. אבל, תוך שניות מתחילים לראות יצורים מכונפים עפים בתוך זה. לזהות אותם זה בגג לעשות ניחושים מושכלים. מידי פעם עוברת איזו אדרית שחורת כיפה קרובה, או 3 קטיפניות שחורות ומקסימות, נאבקות ברוח בכל כוחן. ופתאום אולי זה לא כל כך נורא. הדחף לספור גם כן חזק. ופתאום מגיעים למצב שמסיימים בוקר בים עם 998 קטיפניות שחורות שנספרו (כמו שאכן קרה לפני כמה ימים). הצילו. וחלקן קרובות וחלקן משתפות פעולה עם הספירה, זה משכנע להישאר. אבל בתכל'ס? המוח כבר נדפק מכל הציפורים הרחוקות והמטושטשות שבא רק לברוח חזרה לטיבוע. אה, אוי, רוח, הטיבוע מחריד ואין טעם לחזור. טוב, רק עוד כמה דקות. ואולי, אולי הכל יפסיק ואוכל בשקט לחזור פנימה. אבוי! להקה נוספת של הדברים הרחוקים האלו- ע-כ-שיו אני חוזרת לאכול משהו. רגע, האם ייתכן שזה צוללן אדום גרון עף שם? וזה? אה! איזה כיף! אלקה גדולה, לא, 3 אלקות בעצם. בוקר מגניב. אז רק עוד קצת... ובאמת שזה שווה את זה כי פתאום 2 קטיפניות שחומות חולפות קרוב למדי ואי אפשר ללכת בלי לסרוק את השחפים היקרים שעשו טובה והתיישבו על החוף. אז עוד טיפ טיפה ואני מתחפפת...

There is nothing as bad as sea-watching

I'm really sorry but I can't see myself translating all this sea-watching-bitterness above to English. If you know sea watching you can probably understand how bad it is with all these cool birds, most of them blurred to death but the nice close ones makes you stay outside, frizzing although you have 3 pants and two coats on (when wind-chill this mourning was -8C). In addition, the ringing is rather slow and full of recoveries from yesterday so you can't even use the excuse of ringing for stop birding.. Eventually you stay out, nearly guessing which birds you see and count them 'cause it's stronger than you. Some Loons, Eiders, Long-tailed ducks and scooters and I can't go away.

אל תגידו שלא הזהרתי!

זה נפלא בצורה בלתי נסבלת ובה בעת, בלתי נמנע.

It's terribly amazing and, at the same time, impossible to avoid it.

ובסופו של דבר טיבוע לא נורא מידי ב-18/4- 33 ציפורים (הספירה פה ללא לכידות חוזרות) בעיקר אדומי חזה, גדרון, פרושים מצויים, שחרור, קיכלי אפור נקבה יפיפיה והשיא-מלכילון לבן גבה Firecrest Regolus ignicapilla. המלכילונית הגיעה כשהיא תשושה למדי (השארנו אותה להתחמם מעט במעבדה ולאחר שהתאוששה צילמנו תמונה או שתיים ושחררנו אותה, היא עפה היטב אבל לא סביר ששרדה). למרבה הצער, מלכילונים לבני גבה רבים שמגיעים לפה מתים לאחר שהתאמצו יותר מידי לחצות את הים והותשו יתר על המידה.

At last- the ringing wasn't that bad (on the 18th, at least) if considering the strong wind, preventing us from opening most of the nets. We had 33 in total: mainly Robins Erithacus rubecula, Blackbird Turdus merula, Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs, Wren Troglodates troglodytes, a lovely female Fieldfare Turdus pilaris קיכלי אפור & the best bird of the day- Firecrest Regolus ignicapilla מלכילון לבן גבה! It was an exhausted female, one of three Firecrests observed and ringed in Ottenby this spring. I'm afraid most of them never recover and die here after trying so hard to cross the sea.

בהמשך היום התקבל דיווח על סולה צפונית שנמצאה במרחק של כ-30 דקות מצפון לנו, עפה דרומה. הדיווח התקבל באפליקציית הצפרות המגניבה מאוד (ועדיין בפיתוח- לא חסרות תקלות ודיווחים שנפלטים עקב טעויות מערכת). האפליקציה מאפשרת עדכון מידע על כל ציפור כך שיכולנו לדעת כל כמה דקות היכן היא נמצאת ובאיזו מהירות היא עפה, הודות לצפרי האי שיצאו לחפשה.

אחרי 35 דקות (החליטה להאט במרחק 10 ק"מ צפונית לנו) היא אותרה ע"י פונטוס ועפה ממש מולנו כשהיא עולה מעל לגובה הגלים, גולשת ונוסקת למעלה. עד היום יצא לי לראות אותן בעיקר במזג אוויר מזוויע והחוויה של לראות סולה בוגרת (כלומר, לראות ממש טוב שהיא בוגרת) ועפה להנאתה חדשה עבורי.

להשלמת התמונה- בצד המערבי של שוודיה, בתחנה שנקראת נידינגן, נספרו 1000 סולות בשבוע הזה.

Later that day, a 'Bird alarm' was given in the cool (but still not perfectly working) Swedish rarity App: A Havsula (Northern Gannet Morus bassanus סולה צפונית)!  It was seen about 30 minutes to the north east of us, flying south. So, in the next 25 minutes we were counting seconds, freezing outside (or inside if you are me), eagerly waiting to see it. During that time, every few minutes, further information was added by other observers so we could tell almost exactly when it will be seen (same with King Eiders coming from the south but it never works.. we never see them. but others do, in northern points). Anyway, after 35 minutes (the rude bird started flying slower when only 10km to the north of us) we had it just in front of us; gliding and flying high above the waves, dropping and raising up again.

Just for general impression- 1000 gannets were counted migrating on the southern-western part of Sweden in that week (at Nidingen).

ב-19/4 נשבה רוח איומה ונוראה שפגעה אנושות במאמצנו להגיע לכמות ציפורים מכובדת ומכבדת באפריל הזה. סה"כ טובעו 13 ציפורים אבל לפחות לכדנו סבראש! פרט צעיר (שנה קלנדרית שנייה/ גיל 5) שריגש פה את הצוות המקומי מאחר שנלכדים פה רק כחמישה מידי אביב וזו ציפור כייפית במיוחד (ספויילר- מאז לכדנו גם את השני ואפילו החמישי של העונה)

On the 19th an amazingly strong wind dropped our chances to have any kind of appropriate number of birds in April. We had only 13 birds but everyone is happy when having an adorable Wryneck Jynx torquilla סבראש! One of 5 caught every spring (in average). It was a juvenile bird (5/2C). (spoiler- since then we had 4 more)

לפחות התנחמתי בכך שאיני המשועממת היחידה בימים האחרונים- אנג'ליקה, תלמידה בת 15 שהגיעה לשבוע 'בוא נלך לראות איך מבוגרים עובדים', עשתה בחירה מוזרה לבוא ולראות איך נראים חיי מטבעים (רמז- רעיון רע מאוד. אנחנו לא דוגמא אידאלית לאיך נראים חיי המבוגרים ולו רק מפני שהזקן מבינינו גדול ממני בשנה ושבוע). לאחר כמה ימים עברה להשקיע את עיקר מרצה בבניית מגדלי קלפים.

הודות ללילה בו ערפל כבד כיסה את האי ולבוקר ערפילי ביותר חל שיפור בטיבוע ביחס לשלושת הימים האחרונים- נלכדו 137 ציפורים מ-15 מינים. מעבר לכמות יפה של אדומי חזה וגדרונים, נהנינו גם משטף של מינים חדשים לעונה ובהם סבכי שחור כיפה Blackap Sylvia atricapila 
ועלוית אפורה Willow Warbler phylloscopus trochilus שטובעו.
כמו גם שחפית גמדית Little Tern Sternula albifrons ראשונה בים,
ביצנית אדומת רגל Spotted Redshank Tringa erythropus וחכלילית עצים זכר
Common Redstart phoenicurus phoenicurus שנצפו בשטח.

Thanks to thick fog cover at night and in the morning we had a nice ringing day with 137 birds of 15 species. Besides nice numbers of Robins and Wrens, we also enjoyed few First of season birds like this male Blackap and Willow warbler. In the sea/field we observed first Little Tern Sternula albifrons

 מלכודת הברווזים הניבה גם כן לכידות מוצלחות היום: 2 ברכיות זכרים מ-2010 וטדורנה עם טבעת מ-2003! כלומר, היא לפחות בת 13 שנים ומקפידה להגיע כמעט כל שנה לאוטנבי.

Duck trapping today was pretty good with two retrapped Mallards from 2010 and one Shelduck from 2003! It's older than 13 years and comeing almost every year to Ottenby.

היום זכינו לראות שמש! לא בכאילו ולא בערך. לאחר התפזרות הערפל בשמונה בערך, השמש זרחה ואפילו הגענו ל-13C ברגעי השיא.

Today the sun was shining. For real! I swear. After the fog scattered we could enjoy clear skies and up to 13C.

 הם לא צריכים את יום כדור הארץ. לא כי הם חיים בצורה אקולוגית ומקיימת יותר מהישראלים (מיחזור בשמונה פחים הוא נחמד אבל הצריכה שלהם היא מופרזת בעליל ומיחזור לא יכפר על זה). אלא כי הם חיים בחושך! יש להם נטייה מוזרה למדי לשבת בחושך וכדי שהם ידליקו אור צריך להתרחש אירוע משמעותי.

They don't need Earth-Day. Not because of being very ecological (altogh they do seperate their garbage into 8 different bucks) but because of living in the dark naturally. For seing Swede terning on the light something speical must occur.

לכידת הברווזים החלה.

מאז הקמת מלכודת הברווזים, כפי שסיפרתי בפוסט השני, אנחנו קופצים מידי יום לבדוק שמא נלכדו ברווזים. בימים הראשונים לא לכדנו דבר. למרבה השמחה, ב-15 באפריל לכדנו את הברווז הראשון לעונה *תופים תופים* טדורנה! Shelduck Tadorna tadorna. זהו זכר בוגר שנלכד לראשונה ב-9.4.10 (כבר אז כבוגר, מה שאומר שעכשיו הוא בוגר +3 = בן 6 שנים לפחות (קוד 12 בטיבוע).

On the first few days- nothing. But on the 15th we had our first successful check. We had An amazing male Shelduck Tadorna tadorna טדורנה. It was firstly caught and ringed on the 9/4/2010 and was defined as adult male. No it is even an older mail! (12/ 6 Calendar years). 

The day after we were pleased to find adult male Mallard Anas platyrhynchos ברכיה.

למחרת היינו ברי מזל ולכדנו ברכיה Mallard Anas platyrhynchos זכר בוגר.

ב-17.4 המלכודת עמדה שוממה אך במרחק של כמה עשרות מטרים בלבד הייתה טדורנה, פרט מעט מפוזר יש לציין. הוא לא התבלבל במיקום, הוא גם לא טעה בתאריך, הוא היה מפוזר על פני כמה מטרים, כשעליו עומדת נקבה של נץ גדול Goshawk Accipiter gentilis ומאביסה את עצמה בבשרו. ניסיון יחיד ללכוד את הניצה כשל כאשר היא נמלטה במעוף איטי וכבד מאוד לעבר השדה הסמוך אך כריסטופר, לבוש בחליפת החופמאים המחמיאה שלנו (כמו חליפת צלילה רק בצורת סרבל עם מגפיים שרובכם בטח מכירים כציוד לדייג) הלך לעבר הטדורנה הפזורה ומצא טבעת. מדובר בזכר בוגר שנלכד לראשונה ב20.4.2010 והיה קצת פחות מזליסט בהשוואה לזכר שלכדנו יומיים קודם לכן, גם כן מאפריל 2010.

On the 17th the trap was empty but a few tens of meters away there was a Shellduck, having a bad feather-day. All of its feathers were spread all over thanks to a fed female Goshawk. Our attempt to catch it didn't impress the heavily fling away Goshawk Accipiter gentilis נץ גדול but Christopher (wearing our sexy wader-suite) went over and came back with a ring! This was a male Shelduck, caught firstly on 20/4/2010. This one seems to be a little less lucky then the male we had two days ago and was approximately caught at the same time on 2010.

ככה נוסעים לבדוק את מלכודת הברווזים: יש לנו פה רכב גדול ואפור (בהזדמנות נצבע לירוק) ובו כולנו יכולים לנסוע יחד בנוחות וברווחה.

Every day we go to check how lucky are we- how many ducks were caught. We use our nice and suitable car for that, so there is place for all of us.

אחר הצהרים הלכתי להתקלח. בחיי, זה קורה. אמנם קר אבל פעם בחודש חייבים! (לא, אמא, זה לא רציני. אני מתקלחת בתדירות הרבה יותר גבוהה לתדהמתם של המקומיים).

כל היום חיפשתי הזדמנות להתקלח וכל פעם צץ משהו אחר לעשות, אז כשהכרזתי ש"ע-כ-ש-יו אני הולכת להתקלח" הייתי צריכה לצפות שמשהו ידחה את העניין עוד קצת.. הודות לתכנון נחמד, השביל למבנה המגורים (הבית הלבן) עוברת בדיוק בין שתי מלכודות ההלגולנד. והפעם, בדרכי למקלחת, עמד עורב אפור Hooded Crow Corvus cornix ואכל בקצה אחת המלכודות! החשש המיידי היה שחלילה וחס הוא אוכל ציפור. מיהרתי לעקוף את המלכודת, לרוץ לעברו וללכוד אותו. בדרך זו גיליתי שסתם אכל חתיכת זבל אבל, אם כבר יש עורב ענקי ביד, זו סיבה לטיבוע!

I went to take a shower (For Europeans: this nice thing you do when washing your body and soaping it, recommanded every day or two). I know it's weird but I really insisted that I'm going to do it and right away! I was wrong. The trail to the White House cross between the traps. On my way I saw a gigantic Hooded Crow Corvus cornix עורב אפור eating at the end of the trap. I was afraid it might be a bird so I ran into the trap and caught this monster only to find out it was eating some leftovers from some picnic. When already having it in my hands, ringing should be done!

כשכל הצוות התקבץ לראות את העורב, היה ניכר שמיקאלה מאחרת. היא הגיעה ובידה תירוץ מעולה- "בדיוק באתי לראות את העורב ונכנס למלכודת... זה: $#%(&^*" (*השם נאמר בשוודית כמובן)

When all the stuff came to see the Crow, It was clear that Mikaela is missing. She came after all others but with another surprise! "I came to see the Crow but then I saw this $%^)@#*^ (Swedish name) getting into the trap":

Swedes likes to believe it's summer even when it's clearly not and that there is still two-three more month before we can call it summer (at around the same time from now summer will be also ended). Everything can perswade them summer is here because they truely want it to start immediately.  That's why, for example, they eat ice cream just after they have seen first signs of budding leaves. That's also why it was just natural to see Pontus having ice cream despite the cold weather- temperature was 15C (with some strong wind). I had to expect it after some kind of a Willow tree salix was budding this morning in the front of our trap. I really hope summer comes soon or I'll join this enthusiastic expectation. 

השוודים אוהבים לחשוב שהקיץ הגיע, גם כשברור היטב שהוא עוד רחוק מאיתנו מרחק חודשיים שלושה (אז הוא גם בערך צפוי להיגמר). מרוב ציפייה הם משייכים לכל דבר את הסמליות של הגעת קיץ ודבר כמו לבלוב של עצים יכול להטריף עליהם את דעתם. הייתי צריכה לצפות לזה שאני אמצא את פונטוס (נו, שמות שוודים) אוכל ארטיק באותו יום בו החלה ללבלב הערבה מול אחת המלכודות, על אף שבחוץ היו 15 מעלות עם רוח קפואה וחזקה למדי. כולי תקווה שהקיץ יגיע במהרה או שאמצא עצמי באותה מידת ציפייה מתוחה.

After two very slow days (10-11.4) Finally! Birds!

On the 12th of April we had the first "proper" spring morning with 153 new birds caught and ringed, from 13 different species. Among them were:

- 2 Juvenile Female Waxwings Bombycilla garrulus ציצנית ססגונית; Which made us all smiling for two hours, since last one was caught here in 2010!

- An adult male Bullfinch Pyrrula pyrrula אדמון (which made me smile for the rest of the day).

- Three species of thrushes: Blackbird Turdus merula שחרור, Redwing Turdus iliacus קיכלי לבן גבה & Song thrush Turdus philomelus קיכלי רונן.

- Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs פרוש מצוי 

etc. 

We also had our first recovery from abroad- Polish Great tit Parus major ירגזי מצוי.

On first light and soon after  sunrise we could see nice waves of landing robins and Thrushes (Blackbirds Turdus merula שחרור, Song Thrushes Turdus philomelos קיכלי רונן, redwings Turdus iliacus קיכלי לבן גבה, Fieldfares Turdus pilaris קיכלי אפור, Mistle Thrushes Turdus viscivorus קיכלי גדול and even one very coperative Ring Ouzel Turdus torquatus קיכלי סהרון! It hopped on the ground for maybe 15 min. but we had to stop watching it because we just caught too many cool birds). 

Later in the morning (about 10:30) nice flocks of Great tits Parus major ירגזי מצוי started coming and around 14:00 there was also nice landing of about 500 white wagtails Motacilla alba נחליאלי לבן.

On the afternoon we went Kryssing (Twitching) a female Stonechat Saxicola torquatus דוחל שחור גרון. Luckily we found it and saw it very well to the relief of some of the Swede birders here (since this species is seen only once a year in this area). After all, we were looking for it also yesterday but we used the weather excuse for not finding it.

From the evening of the 12th, and on to the next day (13th of April), thick fog covered the island. we were sure it's too thick and the birds will stay in a dry safe area far shouth but, happily, at dawn, lots of birds were resting all over our lovely little garden! During that day we had 654 birds of 20 species. Mostly Robins Erithacus rubecula אדום חזה but also first Chiffchaf Phylloscopus collybita עלווית חורף, An adult female Bullfinch Pyrrula pyrrula אדמון , a few Goldcrests Regulus regulus מלכילון אורנים and most mentioned species of yesterday.

A cool Pic was taken today- This Blackbird Turdus merula שחרור was caught with breakfast and lost it. The greedy Great tit Parus major ירגזי מצוי

 came to take it and got caught too. who do you think got it at the end?

Non of these two, but a passer-by Robin Erithacus rubecula אדום חזה took it.

On the 14th weather went worse for ringing (considered as "better" if you are a Swede after winter): the day was mainly sunny and clear with just slight wind. Most  birds left us and continued their journey north, but despite the weather we had 118 new birds from 14 species. We also had a nice Finish Female Blackbird Turdus merula שחרור and a Treecreeper Certhia familiaris familiaris טפס עצים צפוני in good light (sort of compensation after the bad pictures I uploaded last time).

Since ringing was really boring on the 10th-11th (6 & 17 birds) and also sea migration, my usual escape when riging is slow, was hidden thanks to some fog over the sea I had to do something. So, I found these pallets added on the next pic. to play with. Since the 11th I found on three more mornings pallets on same location. I'm mainly familiar with Long-eared Owls Asio otus ינשוף עצים pallets and it seems to me that these pallets are larger, more rounded and less compressed. If anyone knows if it's regular for Tawny Owls Strix aluco לילית מצויה, or have any other idea, I'd love to hear any comments!

I never heard of it before- Shops without any sellers!

You see, it's not a new or modern kind of shops.. They just have shops which are unprofitable when paying salaries for sellers so they just put some cash and calculator in the entrance and you write everything down, pay and go away! WOW!
