Fenèkpuszta (it's not an illness but a ringing station!) פניפוסטה- לא מחלה אלא תחנת טיבוע

I arrived to Hungary on the 2^nd of July after too many hours of traveling from Finland. The difference between the countries is huge. I landed in Budapest and felt at home; Skies were blue, fields were sun-burned yellow, haze was blurring the horizon, people were talking all the time, loudly, in… Hungarian (at that point it was clear- I'm not in Israel). Most of the people were incredibly nice but weren’t speaking any English. I took the fascinating three hours train to Keszthely (in which I hade great talk with old Hungarian lady. She was talking in Hungarian and since she knew no English I was talking to her in Hebrew) and was picked up by one of the ringing station volunteers- Benedek.

הגעתי להונגריה בשניים ביולי, אחרי יותר מידי שעות נסיעה מפינלנד. ההבדל בין המדינות עצום וכמעט לא ניתן להסבירו. כשנחתתי בבודפשט, לקח לי הרבה זמן להבין כי אינני בארץ. השמיים היו כחולים, השדות צהובים מצריבת השמש, האופק טושטש הודות לתנועת האוויר בחום הצהרים ואנשים דיברו ללא הרף, בקולניות, בהונגרית (טוב, פה חשדתי ואף הסקתי כי אינני בישראל). רוב האנשים היו חביבים ביותר אך לא ידעו אנגלית. למרות הקושי הטכני הקל, הצלחתי להגיע לרכבת שתיקח אותי לקסטהיי Keszthely  (הזוי כמה קלוש הקשר בין הכתוב בהונגרית לבין ההגייה הסופית, אנא, קראו את שמות המקומות באנגלית מעתה כי השמות בעברית הם סוג של בדיחה גרועה). היו אלה שלוש שעות מרהיבות של נסיעה ברכבת עתיקה, חלונותיה פתוחים כולם והנוף הנשקף מהם הוא נוף כפרי מזרח אירופי של כפרים קטנטנים, שדות ואף אגם בלטון שאורכו אינסופי. במהלך הנסיעה אף זכיתי לשוחח עם זקנה מקומית מקסימה. היא שוחחה עימי בהונגרית שוטפת ומאחר שהבנתי כי אינה מבינה דבר באנגלית מהר מאוד עברתי אני לעברית. נאספתי מתחנת הרכבת על ידי בנדק ויחד נסענו לתחנת פנפוסטה Fenèkpuszta.

The Ringing Station-

תחנת הטיבוע-

Fenèkpuszta is a ringing station located in a train station, a farm, rehabilitation center for birds and a camping site. Or maybe it is a train station with a farm, ringing station, rehabilitation center for birds and camping site? Or farm with..?! I must say it is very confusing in one hand, but great combination on the other hand.

פנפוסטה Fenèkpuszta היא תחנת טיבוע הממוקמת בתחנת רכבת, חווה, מרכז שיקום ציפורים ואתר קמפינג. או, אולי בעצם מדובר בתחנת רכבת בה חווה, מרכז שיקום ציפורים, תחנת טיבוע ואתר קמפינג. או שמא חווה שבה...? אני אישית לא הצלחתי להפריד את הדברים המעורבבים פה כל כך אך השילוב הוא מצויין וייחודי.

In the station there are 12 nets, crossing the reeds on the edge of Balaton lake, towards the water. In addition, the station includes a kitchen tent, ringing shed, one tap with running water, few canoes and a pile of fishing suits and boots.

The ringers, all volunteers, stay in the camp. In the camp there are several tents and shower with pipe-line from the same tap.

All around there are cages with birds: mostly injured raptors after car-crashes or electrocution and different chicks that were brought by local people for treatment and are released after a while. There are also cows, sheep, chickens and gees as part of the farm. The train station's house is used as a little museum with exhibition of eggs and more (and the toilets are used by us).

בתחנת הטיבוע ישנן 12 רשתות אשר חוצות את חישת הקנים לכיוון מי האגם. בנוסף, ישנו אוהל גדול המשמש כמטבח, בצמוד אליו סככת טיבוע, ברז המים היחיד במחנה, ערימה גדולה של מגפיים וחליפות דייגים, מספר אוהלים בהם ישנים חברי הצוות והמוני כלובים בהם ציפורים בשיקום וטיפול (רובן כעת גוזלים אשר הובאו ע"י תושבי האזור או דורסי לילה ויום לאחר תאונות דרכים והתחשמלויות).

ישנם גם פרות, כבשים, תרנגולות ואווזים כחלק מהחווה ואילו מבנה תחנת הרכבת (מעבר להיותו תחנה של רכבת, כצפוי) משמש גם כמרכז תצוגה של תערוכת ביצים, קינים וכדומה לצורכי הדרכה (השירותים משמשים אותנו מאחר ואלו השירותים היחידים באזור).

Ringing starts at 5:45 and ends when temperature is too high (30C) or when it is too windy. Most of the birds that are ringed at this part of the year are Acrocephalus and Locustella Warblers, mainly fledglings. During the autumn up to 200 birds are ringed every morning (with record of 620) and many Barn Swallows are ringed in the evenings.

הטיבוע מתחיל ב-5:45 בבוקר ומסתיים כאשר חם מידי (מעל 30 מעלות) או כאשר נושבת רוח חזקה מידי. הציפורים העיקריות המטובעות בעונה זו הן קניות וחרגולנים, בעיקר פרחונים. בסתיו מטבעים פה עד 200 ציפורים בבוקר ממוצע (עם שיא של 620 ציפורים בבוקר אחד) והמוני סנוניות מטובעות בערב.

During the whole ringing time the eager Golden Oriols, Blackaps, Chiffchaffs and Common Nightingales are singing wonderfully, while Tree Sparrows and Pendulin Tits are seen with their fledglings and the Long-tailed Tits are collecting food for their nestlings. Above us, Great +Pygmy Cormorants, Grey+Great+Purple Herons and Mute Swans are passing over the camp and between our legs Chickens are pecking.

במשך כל שעות הטיבוע הנעימו את זמננו בשירתם המרהיבה זהבנים, סבכים שחורי כיפה, עלוויות חורף וזמירי ירדן, בשעה שדרורי הרים ורמיות נצפו עם משפחותיהם מרובות הפרחונים וירגזים זנבתנים נראו כשהם אוספים מזון עבור גוזליהם. מעלינו חלפו כל העת קורמורנים גדולים וגמדיים, אנפות אפורות וארגמניות, לבניות גדולות וברבורים מצויים ובין רגלינו הסתובבו ניקרו התרנגולות.

After the ringing there is time to go to the pub (300m away) which is 400 years old and in a lovly place for some coffee and rest before going to work in the field or fixing some of the place's basis. Also a nice swim in the lake is a good option. When temperature cools a little, it is good time for birding with canoe along the shore of the lake or Zala river. In the evening it is time to sit, enjoy a good fire and Ferkós' songs in Hungarian.

כשמסתיים הטיבוע ישנם דברים רבים שניתן לעשות. ראשית, יש לפקוד את הפאב הסמוך (300 מ') שהוא בן 400 שנה והוא המקום היחיד באזור בו ניתן לשתות קפה טוב, לנוח מעט ולפגוש בזקני הכפר הסמוך כשהם באים לכוסית של בוקר (ולא, לא עם קפה). לאחר מכן עוברים לעבוד בשדה, מתקנים או מפתחים את המחנה. בהחלט ניתן גם לשכשך באגם מפעם לפעם. כאשר חום הצהריים פוחת מעט זהו זמן טוב לקחת קיאק ולצאת לצפר לאורך חופו של האגם ונהר זלה Zala. בערב, איך לא, יושבים סביב המדורה ונהנים משירתו של פרקו בהונגרית צחה.

Kis-Balaton (Small-Balaton)

On my second day here, Ferkó (head ringer here while Benke the boss is away for his honeymoon) took me for a full day of tour in the area of Kis-Balaton. We followed the Zala river to the area in which the Balaton's water are cleared due to slow flow through few kilometers of reeds and sedge- called the area of Kis-Balaton. In this area about 250 species of birds are breeding and are easily seen from several birding towers. One of the best things we saw was a breeding wall of Sand Martins Riparia riparia and European Bee-eaters Merops apiaster.

ביום השני לשהייתי במחנה יצאנו פרקו Ferkó  (המטבע הראשי בשעה שמנהל המקום נסע לירח דבש) ואני לסיור באזור קיס-בלטון. עקבנו אחר נהר זלה לאזור בו מי האגם מתנקזים תוך זרימה איטית בשטח עצום של קנים, סוף ושאר צמחי מים בדרכם לאגם בלטון. באתר זה מקננים כ-250 מיני ציפורים בהן ניתן לצפות ממספר מגדלי תצפית ובעת רכיבה על אופניים לאורך השבילים הרבים. אחד הדברים המוצלחים ביותר שראינו היה קיר קינון של מאות כוכיות גדות ושרקרקים מצויים.

We also visited the local foundation for protection of the Barn Owl Tyto alba canter,where I heard about some projects of nature conservation and education done by this foundation.

בנוסף, ביקרנו במרכז של עמותה מקומית הפועלת לשימור התנשמות באזור תוך התקנת תיבות קינון רבות ועשייה חינוכית ענפה בבתי הספר.

Summer is here, in Hungary. while in Israel flowers are now mainly thorns, here Poppies are still blossoming. Lots of beautiful butterflies are seen everywhere too. 

הקיץ כאן, בהונגריה. בשעה שבישראל רוב הפרחים יבשו ואלו שעדיין נראים הם לרוב קוצים, כאן הפרגים פורחים, החיטה ירוקה.. בנוסף, אינספור פרפרים נראים בכל מקום.

When considering the fact that Fenèkpuszta is the second best in amounts of birds (with only 12 nets, compared to 100 in the best station, catching almost 16,000 birds in a year) combined both with the wonderful interesting atmosphere and the warm hosting, it is heaven on earth.

I would like to thank a lot for a group of amazingly devoted people that thanks to them many birds are saved, thousands of people get to learn more about the nature and the importance of nature & culture conservation, many birds are ringed and I had great fun: Benedek, Ferkó, Anna, Bálin, Kriszti, Szabolcs, Anikó, Ápri and Emma.

השילוב של היות התחנה הזו התחנה השנייה בהיקף הטיבוע בהונגריה (עם 12 רשתות בלבד, בהשוואה למאה בתחנה הלוכדת ביותר, מטובעות פה בשנה כ-16,000 ציפורים), בשילוב עם האווירה המרתקת והייחודית והאירוח הנפלא, זהו ללא ספק אחד המקומות הטובים ביותר בהם יצא לי לבקר בחיי.

אנצל הזדמנות זו להודות לחבורת אנשים אשר תורמים ללא הרף מזמנם וממרצם באדיקות מעוררת הערצה למען הצלתן של אלפי ציפורים בשנה, הפצת החשיבות של שמירת טבע ותרבות תוך הדרכת אלפי מבקרים בשנה, למידה וחקר תוך טיבוע למען הגנתן של ציפורי הבר והיו מארחים נפלאים על אף קשיי התקשורת הקשים (מין שילוב של גרמנית, הונגרית ואנגלית): בנדק, פרקו, אנה, באלין, קריסטי, סבולץ', אניקו ואמה.
