In Norway we spent two days; two perfect days.

Birding in the eastern end of Norway is based 99% on sea watching. We passed the border with Finland and drove along the big river to the area of Varanger bay. At the western parts we could see lots of sea birds after a long time with mainly "chickens" and passerines. It was a nice change!

הצפרות בצפון צפון מזרח מזרח נורווגיה מבוססות רובה ככולה על תצפיות ים. חצינו עאת הגבול בין פינלנד לנורווגיה ונסענו לאורך נהל גדול עד למפרץ ורנגר (Varanger). בחלקיו המערביים כבר הבחנו בשינוי- המוני ציפורי ים ומים שגיוונו מאוד את המראות שחשפה המשקפת אחרי כשבוע של ציפורי שיר ו"תרנגולות" צפוניות. המוני חמסנים זנבתנים, טדורנות, מאות לימוזות חומות בטן ועוד ועוד.

We drove along the northern road towards Vadsø in which we spent the night on the sea shore. We stopped every now and then (along the main road and also at the church of Nesseby- recommended for waders). At one of the stops we watched not only birds but also with beak- a family of white beaked dolphins! They were playing and jumping partially out of the water every now and than.

נסענו לאורך הכביש הצפוני לכיוון ודסו (Vadsø) שם בילינו את הלילה על שפת הים. עצרנו מפעם לפעם לסרוק את הים והחוף (כל מקום בו ניתן לעצור בבטחה מומלץ בחום ואף הכנסייה של נסבי (Nesseby) שהיא מוצלחת במיוחד לחופמאים. אנחנו ראינו שם גם חמוס שלגים על החוף). באחת העצירות הוסחה דעתי מכך היצורים המנוצים אך לפחות היה זה עם מקור- זכינו למפגש קרוב עם משפחת דולפינים לבני מקור ששחו וקיפצו מחוץ למים כמעט לגמרי. לא קורה בחוף הצפוני של אילת כבר יותר מידי שנים (לא, לא לבני מקור אבל דולפינים אחרים).

At Vadsø, after fast dinner, we sat and watched the sea. I cannot describe the feeling but I can try describing the situation. It was when the sun was pretty low, providing wonderful warm smooth light, the sea was pretty windy and the birds were pushed from the open sea due to a big storm we couldn't fully see or feel. We could only see far dark clouds, thousands of Black-legged Kittiwakes Rissa tridactila in crowded flocks,

After a while, we noticed two huge animals in the see- Whales! Humpbacked Whales Megaptera novaeangliae!

These incredibly huge and impressive whales swam towards us and stopped only few hundreds of meters away. We watched them eating while may Kittiwakes Rissa tridactila and Herring Gulls Larus argentatus were enjoying the fish that were pushed up due to the Whales feast. The only problem was that I had to combine this amazing watch with scanning the see and watching also Long tailed Skuas Stercorarius longicaudus, Arctic Skuas Stercorarius parasiticus, Black Guillemots Cepphus grylle, Razorbills Alca torda etc.

I know it will sound greedy but, few minutes before I noticed the Whales I went to bring some equipment from the car and missed a Great Skua Stercorarius pomarinus. I really wanted to see one and told the guys (We were joining two of Roni's friends, two great birders and photographers) I will be the happiest on earth if there will be a Great Skua over the Whales. It didn't take ten minutes and I saw it! A Great Skua over the Whales. The others had to take of their cameras and check the scope. I was almost fainting when I had to describe the next location: "Roni, do you see? Over the right Whale there is a Great Skua(!!!!). No, now it is over the waving tail!"

At mid-night the storm caught us so we had a fire and went to sleep for a short time.

בודסו (Vadsø), לאחר ארוחת ערב זריזה, התמקמנו על החוף לתצפית ערב- הלילה הוא הטוב ביותר לתצפית ים באזור זה. קשה לתאר את הסיטואציה ואת התחושות אך אני יכולה לנסות ולספר חלקים ספורים, לקוות שתצליחו להנות מהצצה על מה שהיה שם. בכל אופן, הערב, הוא מוצלח מאוד לצפרות מאחר שהשמש יחסית נמוכה ומספקת אור חמים ורך. הרחק בים הרחוק הפתוח נראו ענני סערה שדחקה אל המפרץ ציפורים רבות, הרוחות אפשרו לציפורי לגלוש במעוף מרהיב באור הערב שסיפק לא רק אווירה אלא גם הזדמנות להבחין בכל פרט ופרט בטלסקופ. בין אלפי הריסות נראו גם עשרות חמסנים זנבתנים וטפילים, אלקות גדולות, אוריות, שחפים כספיים (הרניג) ועוד.

כשקפצתי לאוטו, התברר שפספסתי חמסן גדול. לא היה זמן להתבאס כי זמן קצר לאחר מכן הבחנתי בשני יצורים ענקיים, מדהימים, ששחו כיווננו- ליוויתנים גדולי סנפיר! השניים החלו באכילה שכללה אינספור עליות מעל למים, הנפות והטחות זנב, סיבובים ונפנופי סנפיר. ההמולה כנראה העלתה הרבה דגים כי לא מעט ריסות וחמסנים התקבצו סביב השניים. בשלב מסויים, אחרי לפחות חצי שעת תצפית מופלאה תקפה אותי חמדנות מופרזת ואמרתי לחבר'ה (רוני ושני חברים פינים שלו- צפרים וצלמים מוכשרים ביותר) שהכי מושלם יהיה לראות את החמסן הגדול מעל לליוויתנים. זה ללא ספק נאמר יותר כהלצה אך כנראה שהחמסן לקח אותי במלוא הרצינות. כעבור כחמש דקות נראה חמסן מסיבי, חום, עם בסיסי אברות לבנים שזעקו למרחוק- חמסן גדול! החחבורה נאלצה לנטוש את המצלמות לטובת התבוננות במשקפות ובטלסקופים. או אז ביקש ממני רוני הכוונה ואני, עד עכשיו בהלם מכך, תיארתי את המיקום הבא: "החמסן הגדול מימין לליוויתן הימני, רגע, לא, מעל לסנפיר המתנופף שלו!"   המשכנו לצפות בהם עוד כמעט חצי שעה כשמפעם לפעם הוסחה דעתנו על ידי אוריות שחורות, אלקות, אוריות מצויות, חמסנים ועוד.

התצפית נפסקה רק לאחר שהסופה הגיעה אלינו. התיישבנו להתייבש ליד מדורה והלכנו לישון אך מעט בטרם נמשיך לצפר.

In the morning our aim was to travel all the way to the end of the road (where it stops completely), Hamninberg. We stopped a lot and watched many cool birds. The most interesting were:

בבוקר, מטרתנו הייתה סוף העולם, המקום בו נגמרת הדרך, המנינברג (Hamninberg). עצרנו אינספור פעמים לאורך הדרך עוצרת הנשימה וצפינו בהרבה ציפורים שוות. היותר מעניינות היו:

1. מושבת קינון של ריסות בה נצפה גם זכר שר של צחיחנית חרמון- אקרוי (Ekkerøy).
2. צוללן לבן מקור – במפרץ ממזרח לאקרוי (Ekkerøy).
3. שחף לבן כנף וסערונים שחפיים ביטרה קיברג= ממש הגזמה לכתוב את זה בעברית (Ytre Kiberg).

Eventually, after a long day of birding along the shores, we arrived to the end of the world: Hamninberg. At the very end there are not too many passerines but mainly sea-birds. We sat for about one and a half hours, fascinated by the Fishing Gannets, different passing Alcs, Puffins and Fulmars. At last, a coming storm drove us back to the car. We drove back to the island Vardø (the most eastern point of Norway) watching many Parasitic Skuas and ducks on shore because of the windy weather.

Hamninberg

בערבו של היום הגענו לסוף העולם, המנינבג (Hamninberg). המקום הזה, בו נגמרת הדרך, מעוטר בכפר שננטש כבר לפני כמה עשורים ומהווה חלון הצצה לים האינסופי, הפתוח. לאורך החוף אלפי ציפורי ים ורק ציפורי שיר אחרונות בודדות, שני נחליאלים לבנים שרבים מי יהיה בעל הטריטוריה האחרונה, זכר עלווית אפורה ששר בניסיון למצוא נקבה שתקנן איתו בשיח האחרון.

במשך שעה וחצי ישבנו וצפינו נפעמים במאות סולות צפוניות צוללות כראש חץ לדוג במים, אוריות מצויות ושחורות, אלקות גדולות, תוכיי-ים, סערונים שחפיים ועוד. לבסוף, סופה שהגיעה החזירה אותנו לרכב, בנסיעה נפלאה לכיוון וארדו (Vardø)- הפינה הכי מזרחית של נורווגיה. הדרך לוותה באינספור חמסנים, שחפים, ברווזי קרח, מרגונים גדולים, קטיפניות שחורות ושחומות שהתקרבו כולם לחוף עקב הסופה.

At our night camp we were pleased to watch a few Twites Carduelis flavirostris, Arctic and Common Redpolls Carduelis hornemani and flammea just before we had one more very short night.

באתר חניית הלילה, בעודנו מבשלים ארוחת ערב, הייתה ביבנו המולת ציוצים של תפוחיות הרים, צפוניות ושחורות סנטר. הלכנו לישון לצלילי שירתו הבלתי פוסקת של קיכלי לבן גבה (אל חשש, היינו מאוד מאוד עייפים ולא נתנו לו להפריע לנו)

Our last birding target in Norway was a full day on Hornøya Island. Unfortunately, the visit on the isle is possible only between 9:00-15:00 (very bad light for photographers) and arrival is possible only with an expensive boat ride (300 NOK= ~40 EUR). This is maybe the best part of birding in northern Norway and in my opinion it is a must at least once in a lifetime (unless you are photographers... But than you have more problems than the annual needed visit at Hornøya).

When approaching the island, a strange noise is heard, much stronger than the boats engine. It takes some time to realize it is the combination of thousands of chicks and parents blurred by the wind. Before you get to understand it, the strong guano smell hearts your nose.

יעד הצפרות האחרון שלנו לנורווגיה היה האי הורנייה (Hornøya). למרבה הצער, ניתן לבקר באי רק בין 9 ל-15 (שעות בהן האור הכי אכזרי לתצפית וצילום( וגם זה רק באמצעות תשלום מופרז על שייט של כעשר דקות (300 קרונות נורווגיות= כ-200 ₪ הלוך ושוב) אך מדובר באתר הצפרות אולי הכי שווה בצפון נורווגיה, ללא ספק אתר שלא ניתן לוותר עליו (כי בינינו, אם תגיעו למקום הנידח הזה, מתי תהיו שם שוב?). לצלמים בכלל אין את הפריבילגיה לדלג על הביקור אבל באופן כללי הם סובלים מריבוי אתרי חובה.

כאשר מתקרבים לאי, רעש מוזר נשמע, גובר אף על מנוע הסירה הקטנה. עד שמבינים כי מקור הרעש הוא קולותיהם של אלפי גוזלים והוריהם המתערבלים ברוח כבר מכה באף ריח הלשלשת העז, לשלשת דגים... (לנו היה מזל מדהים עם יום שמשי ורוח בינונית, המקום עלול להיות סוער מאוד גם בחודשי הקיץ ובכל מקרה, תמיד יורד גשם- של לשלשת).

On the Island there are breeding cliffs covered with thousands of sea birds- Common Guillemots Uria aalge, Brunnich's Guillemots Uria lomvia, Black Guillemots Cepphus grylle, European Shags Phalacrocorax aristotelis, Atlantic Puffins Fratercula arctica, Razorbills Alca torda and thousands of Kittiwakes Rissa tridactila.

באי מצוקי קינון רבים המכוסים באלפי אוריות מצויות, חייכניות, שחורות.. קורמורנים ימיים אשר אינם יודעים כל פחד, תוכיי-ים, אלקות גדולות וריסות (למקרה שהביקור באקרוי לא הוביל למיצוי, והוא לא).

Also Herring Gulls Larus argentatus are breeding in the open grasslands and families of one parent and up to three chicks are spotting the view in white and gray.

In addition to the breeding species, some other species can be easily seen: Long tailed Skuas Stercorarius longicaudus, Arctic Skuas Stercorarius parasiticus and Great Cormorants Phalacrocorax carbo. If you have luck, also Great Skua Stercorarius pomarinus (we saw one).

באזורים הפתוחים יותר, מין מדשאות פתוחות, מנקדים את הנוף בלבן ואפור שחפים כספיים וגוזליהם (1-3). הגוזלים הצעירים מטרידים את הוריהם ללא הרף והללו רק מחכים לרגע בו ישוב ההורה השני כדי להימלט לים הפתוח, לצוד דגים..

בנוסף למינים המקננים, ניתן לראות בקלות גם חמסנים טפילים וזנבתנים. ברי המזל יזכו גם בחמסנים גדולים (התברכנו באחד).

Among the passerines, we saw Twites Carduelis flavirostris and some feeding parents of Rock, Meadow and Red-throated Pipits Anthus petrosus, pratensis and cervinus. For sea-mammal-lovers I'll mention also few Harbour seals Phoca vitulina that were seen in the crystal-clear water and a Harbour Porpoise Phocoena phocoena.

בתחום הצפ"ש ראינו שוב תפוחיות הרים וכמה פיפיוני סלעים, שדות ואדומי גרון מאכילים גוזלים בתדירות מפחידה. עבור חובבי היונקים אציין גם כמה כלבי ים (פוקת המפרץ) ששחו במים הצלולים ופוקנת מפרץ אחת (מין שילוב של דולפין ולוויתן קטן).

At 15:00 we reluctantly went back ashore. It was a wonderful day of birding. We were watching the feeding/swimming/resting parents in the open sea, coming back almost upset because their chicks are begging too much for attention, feeding the chicks and so on for hours and I could continue forever (there is no dark..).

בשלוש נאלצנו, בחוסר חשק גלוי, לשוב לוארדו. היה זה יום מדהים של צפרות (לא טוויצ'ריות, צפרות) במהלכו נראו אלפי ציפורי ים מגניבות ומיוחדות כשהן אוכלות, שוחות, נחות, דגות, רבות, צועקות, מלשלשות, מביאות מזון לגוזליהן ושבות במהרה לים (להימנע מעודף הצקה של הצעירים) וכו' וכו'... יכולתי להמשיך בכך עוד שעות אינספור (אין חושך עד כמעט אוגוסט) אך שם החל המסע חזרה להלסינקי, הפנייה לאחור.  

The end of the Finnish birding trip-

On the way back, we had few more days at Lapland (were described in the last post). Afterwards we spent one night at Kajaani and went to visit the nest of the Bluetails. We found out they fledged and were able to ring one last male for this year in a nearby territory.

On the next day we drove back to Helsinki along the most eastern minor roads, stopping every now and then to listen to few more field birds (the best was a distant Great Snipe Gallinago media).

I spent my last two days in birding around Helsinki visiting lots of birding towers in parks and wet areas, very recommended if you ever get to this city: 1. Espoo Laasalhti

2. Espoo Finno

3. Helsinki Lammassaari

4. Helsinki Haltiala-forest

5. Espoo Nuuksio-forest.

In those places we saw waders, one interesting gull (4), some Hazel grouses Tetrastes bonasia (5), a nice list of woodpackers species- Families of Lesser Spotted Woodpacker Dendrocopus Minor (1,3), Grey-headed Woodpacker Picus canus (5) Greater spotted Dendrocopus major and Green Woodpeckers Picus viridis and  a male Red-breasted Flycatcher Ficedula parva (5).

It's impossible to summarize such a trip. I had some of the best birding and ringing experiences in my life, all thanks to OMR= Roni Vaisanen and some other great Finnish people that I cannot thank enough in this media. We saw 200 species in total and in my computer, after a very harsh sort I still have over 1000 pictures. WOW!

סיום הטיול בפינלנד-

את הדרך חזרה, שכללה אי אלו ימים בלפלנד, אתאר בקצרה. לפלנד כבר הוזכרה בפוסט הקודם. עצרנו שוב ללילה בקיאני (Kajaani) ובבוקר ביקרנו בקן כחולי הזנב (שצויין אף הוא). הקן כבר היה נטוש אך הצלחנו לפחות לטבע זכר אחרון לעונה זו בטריטוריה סמוכה.

ביום הבא נסענו חזרה להלסינקי, נוסעים בדרכים צדדיות לאורך הגבול עם רוסיה, מאזינים לרחשי שדות אקראיים כמעט (השיא היה חרטומית ביצות שנשמע ממרחק). 

לאחר מכן, בילינו יומיים אחרונים של צפרות בסביבת הלסינקי. יש לא מעט מגדלי תצפית באזורים לחים ומרובי חופמאים, כמו גם כמה פיסות יער מומלצות:

באתרים אלו נצפו הרבה חופמאים, שחף מעניין (4), כמה שכוויי יערות (5), הרבה נקרים שונים: נקר גמדי (3+5), נקר אפור אש (5) ונקרים ירוקים ועקודים, זכר חטפית גמדית (4) ועוד.

לא ניתן לסכם שבועיים רצופים במיטב חוויות הצפרות והטיבוע, חלקן מהטובות בחיי. אלמלא רוני (וייסנן), הדברים לא היו כפי שתוארו בפוסטים האחרונים. הבחור הוא ללא ספק אגדה בעולם הצפרות הפיני. נותרתי אם כן עם רשימה של 200 מינים שנצפו בחלק זה של הטיול, למעלה מאלף תמונות אחרי מיון וסינון ואינספור רגעים שמילים לא יצליחו לתאר (והתמונות בטח ובטח שלא. לא יודעת מאיפה המשפט "תמונה = אלף מילים" אבל אין לו דבר וחצי דבר עם המציאות כשזה מגיע לצפרות, לטעמי. זו רק דרך לקשט את הסיפורים ולהזכיר לו רק במעט את החוויה שהייתה בשדה).

עד הפעם הבאה, כבר מהונגריה...!
