Tomord ringing station was my last station in this visit in Hungary. The camp, placed in the northern-western part on the country is very different than all the others I've visited. It's placed just by the mountains of Austria, in a beautiful forest with two little lakes. The combination of the forest species with the reedbed and fields species was pascinating, Also the fact that in this camp there are no internet (mantioned only to explain the trible delay in updating), no electricity, no runing water, not even a pub in the village (the rarest thing if you ask me).. 

The ringing had started there few decades ago and is continously done by volunteers. Not many birds are ringed (about 50 per day, morning and evening) but the variation is over all. In the hot period of the day we wend swimming in the smaller lake (where no ringing is conducted) or took a walk in the forest. It was most likely the best way to finish these 6 weeks in Hungary!

One of the commonest birds was the Robin Erithacus rubecula. The juveniles are just starting to moult into mre colourful plumage, amazing difference. Also looking better, it's matching their bills!

אחת הציפורים הנפוצות ביותר היא אדום החזה. הצעירים מתחילים זה עתה החליף לנוצות הצבעוניות של הבוגרים(מוותרים על הסוואה נפלאה לטובת יתרונות הצבע) והדבר הולם ביותר את בסיס המקור הכתמתם (כי לאלו מכם שלא ידעו- לאדום החזה אין 
חזה אדום).

In my opinion, the best bird I saw in this camp was undoubtly this amazing juvenile Mistle Thrush Turdus viscivorus. It was caught in the first round of the morning (sorry for the lack of light.. I would be happy to ring amazing birds in mid-day but no, all the best birds always teach us a lesson and the bottom line of it is that we must wake up as early as possible and than even claim we enjoy it!)

לטעמי הציפור המלהיבה ביותר שיצא לי לראות במשך כל שהייתי בטומורד היא ללא ספק הקיכלי הגדול הצעיר הזה. כמובן, הוא נלכד בסיבוב ראשון מה שמביא אותי להתנצלות כנה על החוסר באור, תאמינו לי שהוא כזה אפור לבן גם במציאות בבקשה |(ואין מה לעשות כמיטב הציפורים השוות, הוא חיזק ולימד שחייבים לקום מוקדם אם רוצים את ההפתעות המעניינות, ככה זה. רצוי גם לטעון שאוהבים את זה לטובת הביטחון העצמי וחיזוק הדימוי הצפרי).

Many Sylvia Warblers are ringed daily, most of them already in the beggining of their migration south. Mostly after partial feather moult. But some were very juvenile and clearly fledged in the last few days. It was nice to compair.

 המוני סבכים נלכדים מידי יום בתחנת הטיבוע טומורד. רובם כבר במסע הנדידה דרומה, לאחר שהשלימו חילוף נוצות חלקי. לעומתם, היה ניתן לראות גם פרטים צעירים ביותר שבבירור פרחו מן הקן רק בימים האחרונים. היה מעניין להשוות ביניהם.

 One of my favourites was this male Nuthatch Sitta europaea. Incredibly beautiful but also very skillful in both walking and climbing the tree as if if is not affected by gravity and in calling/singing with huge diversity. Multi talent indeed!

אחד המינים היותר מרשימים בהם נתקלתי באירופה הוא הסיטה האירופית. זאת לא רק הודות להיותן יפיות אלא גם בזכות כשרונותיהן הבולטים: לטפס ולקפץ על גזעי העצים כאילו אינן מושפעות מכוח הכבידה כלל וממגוון הקולות והשירה הרחב שלהן. בתמונות זכר שנלכד וטובע בטומורד והותיר בי רושם עצום.

Most of the time it seemd that the ground of the forest is moving, a closer check prooved it's adctually incredible amount of tinny juvenile frogs and toads.

רוב הזמן נדמה היה כי רצפת היער נעה ללא הרף. למעשה, היו אלו אינספור צפרדעים וקרפדות קטנטנות וצעירות שקיפצו על קרקע היער בחיפוש אחר מקורות מים חדשים ושונים מהאגם הקטן בו בקעו. 

At the end even I didn;t know in which habitat am I ringing... We caught a beautiful juvenile Eurasian Skylark Alauda arvensis, who came from a nearby field to visit the nets on the edge of the foret.

On the way to the airport I had a ride with one of the volunteers of the camp. We stopped for coffee in a local piece of culture (after a week in a camp with no "real" shower, I remind you). The Hungarians are knowen for their special porcelain hand made art and in this fancy coffee house I was reveald to their lovely sense of humur, once again, when after the first sip of coffee an insect was exposed in the cup! Also the birds made me feel it the right place for me (the faces of the well dressed people having their breakfast broght me back to reality)

בדרך לשדה התעופה זכיתי לקיצור דרך משמעותי כשאחד מצוות המתנדבים היה צריך לנסוע לכיוון בודפשט צרכי עבודה. בדרך, כמו שצריך בהחלט אחרי בוקר טיבוע, עצרנו לקפה. היה זה בנקודה תרבותית במיוחד בה נחשפתי לפיסת אומנות מקומית- עבודת פורצלן (וזאת לאחר שבוע במקום בו אין מים זורמים ומקלחת מעבר לטבילה באגם פצפון המזכיר את המעיינות בהרי יהודה, למעשה). בבית הקפה המהודר הוגשה לנו כוס קפה מעולה (ובמחיר שלא הייתם מוצאים בארץ, לא בבית קפה כזה ולא בדומה, שישה ש"ח לערך) בכוס מרובת ציפורים. חוש ההומור ההונגרי נחשף לאחר הלגימה הראשונה- חרק בצבץ על שפת הכוס הפנימית! מגניב. עכשיו נשאר רק לייצר כאלו בארץ.

I had 6 incredibly good weeks in Hungary! Every week with a different welcoming team, most of the weeks in different stations, I've ringed thousands of birds from many different fascinating species, I had many nice opportunities to see and learn about nature conservation in many important projects and of course- add two "needed" lifers: Great Bustard Otis tarda and Bearded Tit Panurus biarmicus.

Once again I would like to thank a lot to all the wonderful people I've met along my too short visit in Hungary and over all to the almighty Béla Tokody for arranging this trip for me. It could never be so enriching and fun without your endless altruistic help! 

עברו עלי שישה שבועות מדהימים וחווייתיים בהונגריה. בכל שבוע פגשתי צוות שונה, עשרות מיני ציפורים, טיבעתי אלפים והועשרתי ברמות שקשה לתאר. אם כל האנשים בעולם רק היו יכולים לדעת כמה ייחודיות ומהנות הן החוויות הללו, כבר מזמן היו הופכים למטבעים וצפרים. נחשפתי לכמויות עצומות של ידע ולמגוון פרוייקטים חשובים העוסקים בשמירת טבע ברבדים שונים. כל הדברים הללו לא היו מתאפשרים אלמלא להכנסת האורחים החמה והמפנקת של ההונגרים ומעל לכל, לעזרתו של מטבע אחד שבזמנו הפנוי הלא קיים תיאם עבורי את כל שלבי הטיול. אנשים טובים עם נטייה כבדה לאלטרואיזם הם תמיד מתנה.

I only want to try to share some of the insanly difficult Hungarian names of birds that are in the headline: Túzok = Great Bustard Otis tarda, Fülemülesitke= Moustached Warblers Acrocephalus melanopogon, Lappantyú= European Nightjars Caprimuglus europeaus and Fehér gólya= White Storks Ciconia ciconia.

Kolon-tó (Kolon Lake) קולון-טו (אגם קולון)

The next ringing station I visited was just a little to the south of Ócsa, less than half way to Fehér- tó, called Kolon-tó (Kolon lake ringing station). This is the station with the longest row of nets in Europe. Every year they open 1.6 km of nets for two weeks of high catch of fledglings and adult birds after the breeding season, before they migrate south. I arrived just after these weeks to help with "only" 52 nets. It was more than enough to catch many lovely birds.

תחנת הטיבוע הבאה בה ביקרתי היא התחנה שלשפת אגם קולון (Kolon-tó), הנמצאת באמצע הדרך שבין אוצ'ה (Ócsa) לפהר-טו (Fehér- tó). זוהי התחנה בה שורת הרשתות הארוכה באירופה כולה. מידי שנה, במשך שבועיים באמצע חודש יולי, הם פורשים 1.6 ק"מ של רשתות המשמשות ללכידה המונית של ציפורים צעירות שזה עתה פרחו ואף של דור ההורים בטרם ישלימו את חילוף נוצותיהם ו/או יתעופפו דרומה. אני הגעתי מיד לאחר שקופלה רוב השורה ורבים מן המתנדבים עזבו את המקום. נותרו "רק" 52 רשתות בשורה ארוכה החוצה את חישת הקנים על גדת אגם קולון (המכוסה כולו קנים וסוף). היה זה די והותר כדי ללכוד כמות נאה של ציפורים ממגוון רחב.

This ringing station is situated in the huge reed bed covering Kolon lake, just by a pretty wide area of sandy hills and diluted forest. Thanks to these habitats the species variation is pretty similar to last stations I visited (as Ocsa, for example, but with major difference in the amounts of birds from each species). The most significant changes were that in Kolon, thanks to the wide-spread reed-bed, I could watch lots of shy species- Bitterns Botaurus stellaris, Little Crakes Porzana parva, and lakes species such as Whiskered Terns Chlidonias hybridus, Black headed Gulls Larus ridibundus, Coots Fulica atra and also a Saker Falcon Falco cherrug was seen flying over the nets in one of the mornings, attempting to hunt a Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca ( attempt that failed) .

חישת הקנים הגדולה ממוקמת בסמוך לגבעות חוליות למדי המכוסות יער דליל. מגוון המינים באזור זה מזכיר מאוד תחנות קודמות בהן ביקרתי, דוגמת אוצ'ה, אך עם הבדלים משמעותיים בכמויות הנלכדות מכל מין ומין. בעיקר בלטו ביחס לתחנות קודמות מינים חובבי קנים- אנפות משורטטות, ברודיות קטנות ועוד, בשילוב כמויות מרשימות של מרומיות לבנות לחי, שחפי אגמים ואגמיות. באחד הבקרים אף נראה בז ציידים חולף מעל הרשתות, משתהה בניסיון לדרוס צולל ביצות וממשיך בדרכו משנכשל.

In almost in every round in the nets we could see a Grass Snake Natrix natrix. Now, in the end of the summer there are also many juvenile tinny snakes.

כמעט בכל סיבוב ברשתות ראינו נחש דשא Natrix natrix יחד עם עשרות צפרדעי נחלים ומין בלתי מזוהה (על ידי בלתי מזוהה, המקומיים דווקא ידעו את השם ההונגרי שלא סייע לי הרבה בהיכרות) של קרפדות קטנות. כעת, בסוף הקיץ, ישנם גם המוני נחשים, צפרדעים וקרפדות צעירים וקטנטנים.

Almost every second day we traveled for some birding in one area of fields nearby a village to the west of the camp (specific location shouldn’t be given due to the sensitivity of the spoken species). There, we could watch a large breeding-colony of Red-footed Falcons Falco vespertinus , Short-toed Eagles Circaetus gallicus and over all- Two Great Bustards Otis tarda.

Every time we came we could watch tens of RFFalcons, mainly adults trying to protect the colony from us but also many fledglings learning to fly and hunt on their own. One day before I had to leave I was able to join Akos, the head of the ringing station, to look for Great Bustards Otis tarda as part of a Long-term survey. We were fortunate to watch a female and her pretty grown chick in one of the fields. For me it was an important "Tic" since I was looking for this species since 2003 (when I had an unsuccessful attempt to twitch it in northern Israel, one of my very first Twitches).

בערך פעם ביומיים נסענו לצפר באזור השדות המקיפים כפר ממערב לתחנת הטיבוע (המקום המדויק שמור מטעמים ברורים של שמירת טבע והגנה על המינים הייחודיים שנצפו במקום). במקום ישנה מושבת קינון עם כחמישים תיבות קינון לבזי ערב, רובן כבר ללא הגוזלים שפרחו בימים האחרונים וכעת מתאמנים במעוף וציד בליווי הוריהם שמיהרו לצעוק ולצלול לעברנו כשהתקרבנו לבדוק את תיבות הקינון (בליווי הפקח האזורי). נצפו גם חיוויאים לא מועטים בשדות, בחיפוש אחר נחש מזדמן ושתי חובות גדולות- הדובדבן שבקצפת (בהונגריה בהחלט יש הרבה דובדבנים ואף קצפת באספרסו שבפאב).

יום לפני שעזבתי את תחנת הטיבוע הצטרפתי לאקוש, מנהל התחנה, לסקר חובות גדולות באזור השדות המדוברים. זהו מין גדול ומרשים המצוי בסכנת הכחדה עקב חיבתם של האירופאים לצוד אותו. כבר משנת 2003, אז ביקר פרט בצפון ישראל ורבים מיהרו לטווצ'ו (טוויץ'= לראות מין, בעדיפות חדש, שמיקומו ידוע והוא אותר ע"י אחרים. י.ל.)  מאוד רציתי לראות חובה גדולה. למרבה הצער, ב-2003 הניסיון נכשל, אך לפחות סיפק חוויות רבות שמלוות אותי עד היום. הפעם, לא היה מקום לכישלון ואכן, עד מהרה אקוש איתר שני פרטים: נקבה וצעיר מגודל למדי שאפשרו לנו לצפות בהם ממושכות ממרחק לא רב. חוויה מתקנת ונפלאה!

We didn't have any luck with the weather, during my staying in Kolon we experienced the warmest day in the history of the area, over 40C. All we could do was three first rounds of net-checking, ring some lovely birds and then go birding with some wine or beer and swim in cold water. Even the rehabbed White Stork Ciconia ciconia at the camp needed few showers every day. In the ringing we still had some nice surprises, despite the heat the birds must fly around… We had a Moustached Warbler Acrocephalus melanopogon with a ring from Belgrade (among many many other without rings or with rings from Kolon. This is the symbolic bird species of the ringing station, Akos's favorite).

מזל בתחום מזג האוויר דווקא לא היה לנו, הגעתי בשבוע עם גל החום הרציני ביותר שתועד באזור אי פעם, מעל 40 מעלות באחד הימים ולא הרבה מתחת באחרים. הדבר אפשר לכל היותר שלושה ארבעה סיבובי בוקר, טיבוע אי אלו ציפורים נחמדות אך לאחר מכן נאלצנו לקפל את הרשתות וללכת לצפר, רצוי בסביבת מקום ששווה לטבול במימיו, בליווי בירות ויין מקומי. למזלנו, הציפורים צריכות לעוף גם כשחם ולכן טיבענו לא מעט זמירונים (המין המייצג של תחנת הטיבוע וללא ספק המועדף ביותר על מנהל התחנה- אקוש) וביניהם אף זמירון עם טבעת מבלגראד.

In addition, we caught a juvenile Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca (before my camera had new batteries), a beautiful juvenile male Bluethroat Luscinia svecica cyanecula after post-juv moult, few Collard & Pied Flycatchers Ficedula albicollis & hypoleuca and many more.

 כמו כן, טיבענו צולל ביצות צעיר (טרם נרכשו בטריות עבור מצלמתי החלופית), כחול חזה יפיפה וצעיר שכבר מיהר וסיים חילוף חלקי, מספר חטפיות שחורות ולבנות עורף ועוד ועוד.

 During my staying Akos, the manager of the ringing station, came back from one month in Kazakhstan. It was a first journey to establish cooperation between Kazakhstan's nature authority and the Hungarian nature-authority. So, in one of the evening we all sat, watched pictures and drank vodka from Kazakhstan. It was absolutely fascinating.

במהלך שהייתי בקולון חזר המנהל של תחנת הטיבוע, אקוש, ממסע של חודש בקזחסטן. הנסיעה נערכה לצורך ביסוס שיתוף פעולה בין רשות הטבע ההונגרית לזו הקזחית. וכך מצאנו את עצמנו, באחד הערבים, יושבים ושותים וודקה קזחית בליווי מצגת תמונות מרתקת מחודש של צפרות באזורים נידחים בקזחסטן.

Another project done at Kolon is about the breeding and general behavior of the European Nightjars Caprimulgus europeus. Every evening we could watch few tens of Nightjars flying around the treetops and along the roads. I addition we caught up to two every evening or early morning, specially when Gallai Zsófi, one of the heads of the project, came over and put lots of effort in catching them. This project had started five years ago and so far they had no recovery from abroad but many of the birds were controlled in the years after they were ringed at the very same place.   

As part of the ringing project we went also to ring a family in the nest. It is impossible to locate the nest when the birds are still but in this case we had prior information from a local ranger who found the nest accidentally.

 פרויקט נוסף המתנהל במקום, הנו פרויקט התחמסים. מידי ערב צפינו בכמה עשרות תחמסים רק רקע השמים, עפים מעל צמרות העצים ולאורך הדרכים הבודדות באזור. בנוסף, נלכדו עד שלושה פרטים מידי ערב, חלקם בעלי טבעות מן השנים האחרונות. מדובר בפרוייקט שהחל לפני חמש שנים למטרת הלימוד של דרכי ההתנהגות של התחמסים בעונת הקינון ובכלל. הודות להיותם בעלי הסוואה מדהימה ועקב הצטמצמותם לבתי גידול ייחודיים ברחבי אירופה, מעט ידוע עליהם ובניסיון לעקוב אחר אוכלוסייתם ולוודא שאנו יודעים מספיק כדי לשמר את בתי הגידול הספציפיים כל כך החל פרויקט כמעט כלל ארצי בהונגריה, בשיתוף עם קבוצת מחקר בלגית.

בחמש השנים האחרונות, הודות לאינסוף שעות השקעה מטעמה של ז'ופי גלאי, בחורה בת 22 שהיא האחראית על פרויקט התחמסים בקולון (בגיבוי מלא של אקוש, מנהל התחנה ועוד עשרות גורמים) טובעו עשרות ואף תועדו לא מעט קינים. באחד הימים אף יצאנו לטבע שני גוזלים ותחמסה בקן שנמצא על ידי פקח מקומי. ללא ידע מוקדם הסיכוי לאתר קן כזה, בעת שהתחמסים דוממים, קלוש. רק כשהצטרף והצביע על הקן ממרחק מטרים ספורים הצלחנו להבחין במשפחה ואף לטבע אותם.

White Storks Ciconia ciconia breeding in Hungary

In one of the rounds in the fields Akos located a dead fledgling of White stork, few meters away from its nest. It was electrocuted, most likely few days or even hours after it fledged. We could tell all of it thanks to rings we found on its legs (aluminum+ colour ring with code) it was ringed with when still in the nest.

באחד מסיבובינו בשדות אקוש מצא חסידה לבנה מתה למרגלות עמוד חשמל, מרחק מטרים בודדים מהקן בו בקעה. יש להניח כי התחשמלה למוות שעות או ימים לאחר פריחתה מן הקן. ניתן היה להבין את הסיפור כולו ואף לדעת את גילה של החסידה המבאישה הודות לטבעות על רגליה (צבעונית בעלת קוד זיהוי+ טבעת אלומיניום) שנענדו על רגליה כשעוד הייתה גוזל בקן.  

 

When I was still in Fehér-tó I joined Péter Lovászi the head ringer during my second week there, to count and control the White stork's nests in the area north to Szeged. There is a huge amount of stork nests in Hungary, almost in every village there are up three nests. Volunteers are driving through the villages and counting the nests and the pulls so even when there is no time of enough people to ring all those pulls it is still possible to evaluate the breeding successes and many other important things for keeping these birds in Hungary. About 90% of the Storks are breeding on electric-poles. Sadly, many times it ends up with the death of a parent or a fledgling.

כשהייתי בפהר-טו הצטרפתי לפטר לוואסי המטבע הראשי בשבוע השני לשהייתי בתחנת הטיבוע, לספירת קיני וגוזלי חסידות באזור שמצפון לעיר סגד Szeged. ספר קיני החסידה הלבנה בהונגריה הוא עצום ורב, כמעט בכל כפר ישנו קן ולעיתים אף עד שלושה קינים. צפרים מתנדבים לספור את הגוזלים בכל קן וקן לצורך הערכת גודל האוכלוסייה והצלחת הקינון מידי שנה בשנה. כ-90% מקיני החסידות בהונגריה הם על עמודי חשמל. למרבה הצער, במקרים לא מעטים זה נגמר בהתחשמלות אחד ההורים או הפרחונים.

Every ringing station in Hungary has its pub- in Hungary the pubs are also the coffees and many times also light food is served there. It must be nearby the camps since alcohol must be available right after the ringing session (is there better drink than cold beer after a long warm mourning of ringing? I doubt it).

בסמוך לכל תחנת/מחנה טיבוע בהונגריה חייב להיות פאב. הפאבים בהונגריה משמשים גם כבתי הקפה המקומיים ולעיתים אף אוכל קל מוגש במקום. הפאב חייב להיות סמוך מאחר שהמטבע ההונגרי הממוצע חייב אספקת אלכוהול מיד לאחר הטיבוע (ובינינו, אין משקה טוב יותר אחרי בוקר טיבוע ממושך וחם מאשר בירה צוננת).

Kolon ringing station doesn't have a pub next to it, but an office. One of the heads of the stations committee is also the owner of the pub in the nearest village, Iszak. So, almost every day we went to bring mail or fix some paper work at the office-pub, great combination!  

בתחנת הטיבוע של אגם קולון אין פאב, אלא משרד. כלומר, אחד מראשי העמותה המנהלת את תחנת הטיבוע ואף מנהל החשבונות שלה הוא בעל הפאב בכפר הסמוך, איז'אק. מידי יום נסענו לטפל בבדואר ובניירת במשרד-פאב. שילוב מנצח.
