Summer had arrived to Ottenby. More and more chicks of waders are hatching every day. Many more are still incubated. Same with the Mute Swans cygnus olor and the different gulls (Mew, Herring, Great Black-backed, Lesser Black-backed etc.) who are laying on their eggs devotedly. In the forest, while the Starlings Sturnus vulgaris are already feeding their pools, most birds are still in the pairing race: twittering, calling, displשying, squeaking, pecking, singing... and on the other hand- checking and comparing the different options. The coupled ones are putting all their effort in constrוcting safe comfort nests.
When walking in the forest one (me, for example) can be driven mad by the two next things: the unbelievable amount of calls should be recognized at a given minute and, much worse, by the unbelievable amount of mosquito bites at the same given moment. Swarms of these eager blood-suckers are all around. The Spetted Flycatchers Muscicapa striata are enjoying this buffet while I scrub myself all over.
Not only the birds and the mosquitoes are enjoying the summer- Many butterflyes are seen every day- Painted Ladeis, Red Admirals Vanessa atalanta, Large Cabbage White Pieris brassicae and more, Lady bags are covering the open fields, Drgonflyies numbers are increasing- Four-spotted Chasers Libellula quadrimaculata are seen every day, and also first males of Hairy Hawkes rachytron pratense were seen. While walking in the forest, a new Smooth newt Lissotriton vulgaris was also found in a little puddle, only 3 cm long.
הקיץ הגיע לאוטנבי. יותר ויותר פרחוני חופמאים נראים עם כ יום שעובר. רבים עדיין בביצים, כמעט לפני הבקיעה. כך בדיוק עם הברבורים שעדיין דוגרים על ביציהם באדיקות כמו שעושים גם שחפים ממינים שונים (אפרורי, כספי, ימי, שחור ועוד).
ביער, הזרזירים כבר מאכילים גוזלי בשעה שציפורים אחרות עושות מאמצים אדירים למצוא זיווג: ציוצים, שריקות, הדהודי ניקורים, שירה וקריאות נשמעות מכל עבר בשעה שהנקבות מסיירות ובוחנות את שפע ההיצע. הזוגות הטריים עוסקים בבניית קינים נוחים ובטוחים ככל האפשר.
כאשר מישהו הולך ביער (אני, למשל) הוא עלול להשתגע משני דברים עיקריים: כמות קולות הציפורים שיש לזהות בכל רגע נתון וגרוע מכך בהרבה, הכמות הבלתי נתפסת של עקיצות יתושים באותו רגע ממש. החטפיות האפורות, לעומתי, מגדירות את הזרמים המזמזמים האלו כבופה איכותי וחוטפות יתושים רבים (לא מספיק, לטעמי).
לא רק הציפורים והיתושים נהנים מהקיץ שהגיע לפתע, המוני פרפרים דוגמת נמפיות חורשף וסרפד, לבניני כרוב ומגוון מיני שפיריות (פירוט שמות באנגלית ולטינית בטקסט הנ"ל, לרבים לא מצאתי את השמות העבריים ולא בא לי לחרטט) נראים מרחפים באוויר שהתחמם בלי שום התראה ממשית, חיפושיות משה רבנו ממש מכסות את שטחי העשבייה והזמזום הבלתי פוסק בסביבה מבשר על ריחופם של אינספור חרקים שקטונתי מלזהותם. באחת השלוליות הקטנות ביער נמצא גם טריטון רך צעיר, באורך של כשלושה ס"מ בלבד.

While Passerine-ringing numbers are decreasing, we started ringing wader-chicks:

By now we ringed three Ringed Ploves Charadrius hiaticula and a Northern Lapwing Vanellus vanellus on 31st of May.
עד כה, טיבענו 3 אפרוחי חופמי צווארון ואפרוח קיווית מצוייצת ב-31 במאי.
The female Ringed Plover Charadrius hiaticula is pretending to have a broken wing so we (as possible predators) will try to follow her and loose the Chicks location.
נקבת חופמי הצווארון מעמידה פני פצועה כדי שננסה לתפוס אותה (כטורפים פוטנציאליים) ונאבד את מיקומם של הצעירים.
The Ringed Plover Charadrius hiaticula chicks. We were able to find only three out of for thanks to their special tactic- freezing when found by predators, using their great camouflage.
שלושה מתוך ארבעת אפרוחי חופמי הצווארון. נלכדו רק שלושה הודות לקפיאתם במקום מרגע שהוריהם מזהירים מפני טורף. ההסוואה הנהדרת בשילוב הסטטיות מונעת את גילויים במקרים רבים.
The parents are waiting for their beloved chicks. Easy to see that the father has already experienced it since it is carrying a ring (on the left).
ההורים ממתינים לאפרוחיהם האהובים. ניתן לראות כי הזכר כבר עבר את התהליך בעבר והוא נושא טבעת על רגלו הימנית (משמאל).

אידה הנסון מחזיקה אפרוח בן מספר ימים של קיווית מצוייצת. האפרוח אמנם צעיר מאוד אך רגלו בעובי כמעט כעובי הרגל של קיווית בוגרת כך שהוא יכול לשאת את הטבעת מבלי שיהיה חשש שתיפול (כמובן, חשש שלנו, לאפרוח לא אכפת ממנה)

אפרוח מדהים ביופיו וחמוד בצורה שקשה לתאר טובע בשניים ביוני- אפרוח של לימוזה מצוייה. מדובר באפרוח של אחד הזוגות שאותרו כבר בסקר של ה-11.5 ולמרבה המזל הצליחו בקינונם בצורה יחסית- בקע להם אפרוח. זוגות אחרים של חופמאים איבדו את גוזליהם כתוצאה מטריפות ואילו אחרים עדיין דוגרים. זוג נוסף של לימוזות נמצא בשלב מתקדם של הדגירה ותוך כשבוע וחצי בטח יבקעו האפרוחים.
And some passerines after all:
One of the remarkable birds in the slowing passerine ringing is the exciting Common Crossbill Loxia curvirostra we caught in the first of June. Few were observed flying over in the last three days but Christopher and I were really excited when finding this juvenile bird in the nets early in the morning. It had fledged not very long time ago and its plumage is very fresh.

אחת הציפורים המוצלחות ביותר בטיבוע ההולך ודועך היא צלוב המקור המצוי שנלכד באחד ביוני. נצפו כמה צלובי מקור בשלושת הימים שקדמו ללכידתו אך כריסטופר ואני הופתענו ביותר ואף התרגשנו כהוגן בעת שמצאנו אותו מחכה ברשת באחד הסיבובים המוקדמים של הבוקר. מדובר בפרחון צעיר שעזב את הקן ממש לאחרונה ונוצותיו כולן מאוד טריות.
Juvenile Crossbills have very pointed tail feathers and are now also different from the adults for being very fresh when the adults haven't moulted their feathers.
הפרטים הצעירים נבדלים מהבוגרים בנוצות זנב מחודדות מאוד ובעונה זו גם טריותן מסייעת רבות מאחר שהבוגרים טרם החליפו נוצותיהם.

For most of us it was a new species in hand (not very common on the island, despite its name, and usually fly to high for the nets) so we had to celebrate it with a special "cross-cake" fica (the Swedish name for a coffe&cake break). Note also the Swedish species list of Mikaela in the front. Nice!
לרובנו המוחלט היה זה מין חדש ביד (מאחר שעל אף שמו האנגלי=נפוץ, הוא לא כל כך נפוץ כאן באי וגם כאשר הוא נצפה זה לרוב במעוף גבוה מידי לרשתות) ועל כן הוא נחגג בהפסקת "עוגה צלובה" וקפה שנקראת פה- פיקה. שימו לב לרשימת המינים השוודית (של מיקאלה) בחזית התמונה. לכל צפר/טוויצ'ר שמכבד את עצמו יש פתק מתקפל כזה שנמכר בעלות של 8 שקלים בכל חנות צפרות והכסף נתרם למרכז הצפרות. נחמד!
On the second of June came Prof. Anders Hedenström from the University of Lund specially to give as a very interesting talk about migration research (besides that he comes often to birdwatch and to work with the Ringed Plovers research done by Linus under his supervision). The talk started with some of the history of ringing and the newer methods to learn about bird-migration, like GPS-loggers and Light-loggers. It was followed with talking about wind-tunnel based research, in the second part of the talk. Fascinating!
בשני ביוני הגיע פרופסור אנדרס הדהנסטרום מהאוניברסיטה בלונד במיוחד כדי להרצות לנו על ההיסטוריה של חקר הנדידה דרך ההיסטוריה של הטיבוע ועד לשיטות חדישות יותר דוגמת משדרי GPS ומשדרים קלים. לרוב הוא מגיע לכאן כדי לצפר או כדי לעבוד בפרוייקט המחקר החדש של חופמי הצווארון שנעשה על ידי לינוס תחת פיקוחו וחסותו. בחלק השני של ההרצאה שמענו גם על המחקר המרתק שנעשה כאן בתעלת רוח המאפשרת להם ללמוד המון על שיטות המעוף של ציפורים ועטלפים כאחד. מרתק!

After learning many
new things we went out to catch the House Martins Delichon urbicum breeding all around
the stations roof in search of 15 Light-loggers attached in 2011-12. We caught
56 Martins of which 27 were re-traps and 29 were new but besides lots of
parasites they weren't carrying a thing. At the end we had lots of droppings,
dead parasites, very few hours of sleep left but also lots of refreshing new information
and some incredibly interesting new facts. Worth it!
When checking the
re-trapped birds ring numbers it appears that many of the controls were ringed
one up to three birds before or after one who had a light-logger.. Upsetting
but that's part of the research- we never know which ones will come back and
what will they do while being away. Maybe next year some of them will be back...
לאחר שלמדנו המון, יצאנו ללכוד את הטסיות המקננות בגג תחנת הטיבוע בחיפוש אחר משדרים קלים שהוצמדו ל-15 מהן בשנתיים האחרונות. נלכדו 56 טסיות מהן 27 מטובעות ו-29 חדשות. אך למעט המון טפילים הן לא נשאו דבר. בסוף הטיבוע נותרנו עם המון לשלשת, טפילים מתים, מעט מאוד שעות שינה אך המון ידע חדש בראשים. שווה לאללה!
בדיקה יותר מאוחרת של מספרי הטבעות על הטסיות החוזרות נמצא כי חלקן טובעו ציפור עד שלוש לפני או אחרי טסית שנשאה משדר! מצד אחד מתסכל נורא ומצד שני, זה בדיוק המחקר: להבין מה קורה עם הטסיות בחודשים בהם אינן מקננות בשוודיה, להבין מדוע חלקן חוזרות וחלקן לא, ללמוד את נתיב מעופן ואת אסטרטגיית הנדידה שלהן כמו פרטים רבים נוספים על אורחות חייהן. אולי שנה הבאה תשובנה...
Another lovely bird, which was ringed on the 6th of June, is this AMAZING adult male Common Rosefinch Carpodacus erythrinus. After 15 Females and second year males (who look exactly like the females) we had the first beautiful male ever for me and second for Petter. What a beauty!
עוד ציפור מרהיבה, שנלכדה בשישה ביוני, היא הזכר המדהים הזה של ורדית אירופית שנלכד אחרי טיבועם של לא פחות מ-15 נקבות וזכרים צעירים (שנה שנייה, קוד 5) שנראים בדיוק אותו דבר ולא ניתן להבדיל ביניהם כמעט בכלל. היה זה הזכר הבוגר הראשון שאי פעם טיבעתי (ראיתי) והשני בשביל פטר.

הנהיגה בשוודיה היא, כמקובל גם בישראל, בצד שמאל. לפיכך, הייתם מצפים כי כל הנהגים ייסעו כך אבל לא! נהגי מכוניות לחלוקת דואר נוהגים בצד ימין וזאת על מנת שלא יאלצו לצאת מן הרכב כדי לשים את הדואר בתיבות הממוקמות לצד הדרך! מתוחכם ביותר..
The driving in Sweden is on the left side (the usual if you are not British or from a (mainly "ex") British colony) but not all the cars are like that! The postmen drive on the right side! It prevents the need of exiting the car for putting the mail in the Mail-boxes, placed on the right side of the roads. Very smart!
