Early in the morning of the 24th we caught the bird Micha have longed to see for the last two month- Barred Warbler Sylvia nisoria. Micha, a Dutch Bachelor's student, is conducting a research about their breeding success at Ottenby and surveying the whole area, looking for singing males nowadays. After enjoying first few observations last week, we were hoping to ring some too. Luckily it was very early in the morning, before Micha went away to the breeding grounds of these warblers. In the next days we Caught 4 more. Mainly Adult females and 2nd year males, just for the fun of discussing their age and sex (Challenging will be a good adjective to use when describing their moult strategy). Always fun to have so beautiful birds...
מוקדם בבוקר העשרים וארבעה במאי כדנו את הציפור לה חיכה מישה כל החודשיים האחרונים- סבכי ניצי. מישה, חוקר הולנדי בעיצומו של התואר הראשון, חוקר את הצלחת הקינון של הסבכים הניציים בסביבת אוטנבי ועוקב אחר מספר הזכרים השרים בימים אלה. לאחר ששבוע שעבר נצפו הפרטים הראשונים, ספרנו את הימים עד ללכידת הפרט הראשון. למזלו הרב, הוא נלכד מוקדם בבוקר, בטרם יצא מישה לסקר בשטחי הקינון בהם אין קליטה סלולרית. בימים שלאחר מכן לכדנו עוד 4 פרטים, רובם זכרים צעירים ונקבות בוגרות, לו רק בשביל התענוג שבזיהוי הזוויג והגיל שלהם (מאתגר משהו). ציפור מהממת!

More luck than brain- story of the week!
On 27.5, at around 9:00, A Blyth's Reed Warbler Acrocephalus dumetorum was observed and heard singing 4.5 km from the ringing station. Despite my great excitement, it was my ringing shift and driving over there was impossible. Five minutes after the end of the ringing we were all in the cars, on our way to kryss it (twitch it).
It was about to start raining any minute and the forecast showed it will be a rainy afternoon. We had to find it and fast.
After 15 minutes with not even a faint call some head back to the station for lunch. 10 more minutes and some left us for surveying waders. 10 more and also Christopher and Per had to go shopping (food, nothing else can be shopped unless you consider buying at the souvenir shop of Ottenby as shopping). I was with only few other Swedish birders when, suddenly, a very short brown wing was seen for few milliseconds. I had not enough time to say a word before it started singing! and calling, jumping in the densest bush at Ottenby's area, showing only small parts of body. It took some time and then, it climbed all the way up and perched a wonderful top flowering branch. PERFECT!! Christopher and Per joined, whatched it with me and we wend duck-trapping (nothing in the trap that day).
When we head back to the station and parked the car we saw Puntos and Jon running the run of their lives, opening a net in the shortest time ever (world record, for sure) and when the others joined them they fled a bird into the trap. We were really surprised to see them so happy for catching a bird for the upcoming guide. It was too much effort for a guided tour ringing...
When we saw the bird it was clear.. It was a Blyth's!!!
They heard it singing while eating lunch and thought it simply can't be. When they finished to eat, fifteen minutes later, they tried to see the bird and it flew straight towards the net! If flew under it but got into the trap!
Great luck! The best I could ask for: first singing on top of a blossoming perch and then in hand!

יותר מזל משכל! ללא ספק, הסיפור של השבוע..
הכל התחיל כשבתשע בבוקר לערך, ב-27.5, דווח על קנית פינית שנשמעה שרה במרחק 4.5 ק"מ מתחנת הטיבוע. למרבה הצער, היה זה במהלך משמרת הטיבוע שלי ולקפוץ לחפה לא בא בחשבון. עם זאת, 5 דקות לאחר שהסתיים הטיבוע, כבר היינו ברכב בדרכנו למיקום בו נשמעה הקנית. התנאים היו בהחלט לרעתנו גשם היה צפוי התחיל לרדת ב-12 והשעה הייתה כבר 11:30 כשהגנו לנקודה המדוברת. מה שמותיר חצי שעה על הנייר. אבל לא כך בשדה בקצה של אי. הרוחות סערו, נעשה אפור והחל לזרזף. ממש לא עושה חשק לשיר. הציפור לא הפיקה שום צליל במשך זמן ממושך טרם בואנו ורבע שעה של המתנה הייתה מדכאת למדי. חלק פרשו לטובת ארוחת צהרים. כעבור עשר דקות פרשו נוספים לטובת סקר החופמאים. בהמשך, פרשו כריסטופר ופר לקניות בסופר הסמוך ואני נותרתי לבדי עם מספר טוויצ'רים שוודים, מצפים ומקווים שהגשם יחכה.
לא עבר הרבה זמן (של תצפית חסרת תכלית בכמה סבכיי קוצים) והבחנתי בשביב כנף עם חישוף אברות קצר להפליא! לא הספקתי לפצות את פי, להעיר את תשומת לבם של סובבי, והוא החל לשיר! פשוט כך, במלוא גרון. לאחר כמה הצצות על שביב זנב, פיסת מקור וכו' קפץ הקנית לראש ענף פורח בראש השיח והמיס את צופיו. כריסטופר ופר הגיעו, צפו, ונסענו לבדוק את מלכודת הברווזים (ריקה הפעם..).
חזרנו לתחנת הטיבוע, החנינו את הרכב בדיוק בזמן כדי לראות את פונטוס ויון רצים את ריצת חייהם, פותחים רשת וכששאר החבר'ה מצטרפים אליהם רצים לתוך המלכודת תוך מאמץ עילאי ללכוד איזו ציפור. אמנם, הייתה צפויה הדרכה תוך מספר דקות. אך, היה זה מאמץ מוגזם ביותר. התקרבנו במהרה ונדהמנו- קנית פינית!!!
מסתבר שהם שמעו אחת שרה בעת שאכלו צהרים אך לא האמינו כי זו באמת הציפור. כעבור רבע שעה סיימו לאכול, יצאו החוצה, עדיין שמעו אותה והבריחו אותה לשיח פחות צפוף כדי לבחון את העניין בוודאות. הציפור לא עפה לשיח הזה אלא עקפה את הבניין ועפה היישר לרשת המערבית (אותה עקפה למרות שנפתחה במהירות שיא) עפה לתוך המלכודת המערבית ונלכדה! ואם זה לא מקרה של יותר מזל משכל, איני יודעת מה כן :)
עוד פעם השילוב המושלם- תצפית והאזנה טובה בשדה ומיד לאחריה לכידה....

On the 28th it was really hard for me to wake up, so Per found a perfect way to make it easier: while opening the nets (3:10 am) he saw an amazing Short-eared Owl Asio flammeus in the eastern trap and brought it to the lab!
What a bird! The only reason to become gothic in the world in for having yellow eyes encircled ashy-black like they have.
After very short discussion it was noted as 2nd-year female.
ב-28 היה לי ממש קשה להתעורר אז פר היקר מצא אחלה פתרון: בשעה שפתחנו את הרשתות (3:10 בבוקר) הוא ראה ינשוף שדות מרהיב במלכודת המזרחית והביאה למעבדת הטיבוע. הציפור הזו היא הסיבה היחידה בעולם לחבב את המראה הגותי ולאמץ עיניים צהובות ואיפור שחור אפלולי סביב העיניים (מי מסדר לי זוג עדשות צהובות לפורים?! ושיער מחומצן בפסים של ספר ערס בתחילת דרכו?). ושוב לנימה רצינית- אחרי בירור קצר זוהתה כנקבה בשנתה השנייה
Further on that day we had our second Greenish Warbler Philloscopus trochiloides for this season. Almost every day we hear at least one singing male in the garden. It was a really greenish one with nice wing-bar!
בהמשך אותו היום נלכדה העלווית הבלטית השנייה לעונה. כעת, כמעט מידי יום אנו שומעים אחת שרה בגינה. פרט זה בלט בהיותו הרבה יותר ירקרק, בהתאם לשמו האנגלי, ואף היה בעל פס כנף ברור יותר בסוככות הגדולות
Later, at noon, a Night Heron was reported at Albruna quarries and everyone got mad! It's the 11th observation of this species in Sweden. We spent the rest of the afternoon looking for it. To make a long story very short- some saw it very fast thanks for being unable to guide in Swedish (and weren't too excited to see this species) while others had to look for it for 5 hours... guess who is who. The ones who haven't seen it had a lovely picnic supplied by those who saw the bird (the nearby tinny supermarket was almost empty thanks to many birders coming and starving while waiting) and after that, we had to check the duck trap.
בצהרים דווח על ציפור מגה נדירה בשוודיה: אנפת לילה! מדובר בפרט ה-11 לשוודיה שהחליט לעצור לנפוש במחצבת אלברונה. בילינו את שארית אחר הצהרים בחיפוש אחריה. חלקנו, ברי המזל, ראינו אותה תוך דקות ספורות. היה זה החלק שכלל את הצפר הכי פחות נרגש מהציפור (אני) ואילו שלושה אחרים נאלצו להישאר בתחנת הטיבוע ולהדריך בשוודית. כפיצוי ראוי קפצנו להמשיך בשוד המינימרקט הסמוך, שנותר כמעט ריק מרוב צפרים שהגיעו לאזור וגוועו מרעב בעת ההמתנה לאנפה, וארגנו להם פיקניק לתפארת (לקח 5 שעות לכל מי שלא ראה אותה ממש בהתחלה). ולאחר מכן, נסענו לבדוק את מלכודת הברווזים
We had a wonderful duck!
When looking only on the back one might confuse it with a fish... A female Garganey Anas querquedula. First time in hand for me. Nice ending for a wonderful day!
היה לנו ברווז מדהים! אם מסתכלים רק על הגב, אפשר לטעות ולחשוב שמדובר בדג אך למעשה, זוהי נקבת קרקיר. סיום נפלא ליום מעולה

Slow-worm - Anguis fragilis (a legless lizard) was found in our garden on the 29th. Being very small it is probably a juvenile but I'm not a reptile expert... For me it's the first time to see it. In Israel there are no Slow-worms.
ב-29.5 נמצאה בחצר לטאה מאוד מגניבה ממין חסר רגליים (לא הצלחתי לאתר את שמה בעברית מוזמנים להגיב אם ידוע לכם, אשמח מאוד!). שימו לב שהיא נבדלת מנחשים, בין היתר, בזנב רחב מאוד כמו גם בעובדה שהיא חסרת ארס. גודלה (קוצרה) מרמז על כך שככל הנראה מדבר בפרט צעיר מהשנה מאחר שבוגרים יכולים להגיע לאורך של 45 ס"מ
